Vitexin is a C-glycosylated flavone found in various medicinal plants with several proven biological properties such as anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, antimicrobial, cytotoxic, and antioxidant activities. Considering that the human population consumes many foods that contain this flavonoid, the objective of this study was to investigate the genotoxic and the antigenotoxic potentials of vitexin by the SMART (Somatic Mutation and Recombination Test) in Drosophila melanogaster wings, in vivo. To evaluate the genotoxic activity, larvae obtained from standard (ST) and high bioactivation (HB) crosses were chronically treated with different concentrations of vitexin (0.15, 0.3, and 0.6 mM). For the evaluation of antigenotoxic activity, the same vitexin concentrations were associated with two damage inducing agents: doxorubicin (0.2 mM) and benzo[a]pyrene (1.0 mM). The results obtained for genotoxic activity showed that vitexin did not induce a statistically significant increment in the frequency of mutant spots, when compared to control. The results for the evaluation of antigenotoxicity indicated that the flavonoid statistically reduced the frequency of mutant spots, when compared to those treated with only the damage inducing agents. Thus, this article presents results that have demonstrated the antigenotoxic activity of vitexin, which could be applied in new studies for the development of drugs with chemoprotective effects.

Serious neurological disorders were associated with cadmium toxicity. Hence, this research aimed to investigate the potential neuroprotective impacts of the ethanolic extracts of Citrus aurantium unripe fruits and leaves (CAF and CAL, respectively) at doses 100 and 200 mg/kg against cadmium chloride-provoked brain dysfunction in rats for 30 consecutive days. HPLC for natural pigment content revealed that CAF implied higher contents of Chlorophyll B, while the CAL has a high yield of chlorophyll A and total carotenoid.

Hawthorn leave flavonoids (HLF) are widely used as an herb or dietary supplements for cardio-cerebrovascular diseases. However, its gastrointestinal absorption behavior and mechanism have not been disclosed. In this study, gastrointestinal absorption and its regulation of 4''-O-glucosylvitexin (GLV), 2''-O-rhamnosylvitexin (RHV), vitexin (VIT), rutin (RUT) and hyperoside (HP) in HLF were investigated using in vitro, in situ and in vivo models.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: The dried fruit of Crataegus pinnatifida Bunge (Hawthorn in Chinese) is a traditional medicine used in China, Japan and Korea for thousands of years. Hawthorn is documented in the Chinese Pharmacopoeia, as a folk medicine that is used to eliminate food, strengthen the stomach, move qi and dissipate blood stasis, treat stagnation of meat and food, gastric distention and fullness, and has anti-inflammatory effects. Vitexin, a flavonoid glycoside, is an important biologically active compound derived from Hawthorn, with significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.

Atherosclerosis (ASC) is characterized by foam cell-mediated plaque formation, vascular endothelial inflammation, and lipidosis and is the rudimentary cause of cardiovascular diseases. This is the pre-eminent global factor of mortality. This etiological paradigm is significantly influenced by several proteins, where 23 pivotal proteins involved in ASC were meticulously gleaned on the basis of literature studies.

To explore the feasibility of pure yeast fermentation in whole Calamondin puree (FWCP) for the utilization of the whole fruit, yeasts were isolated from naturally fermented Calamondin, and their fermentation characteristics were evaluated. The results indicated that all yeasts were able to ferment FWCP, reducing the sour taste by degrading citric acid, increasing the contents of nutrients (such as phenols and limonins) and volatile compounds, and enhancing the antioxidant activity and inhibition of α-glucosidase activity ( < 0.05).
