Aerobic anoxygenic phototrophic (AAP) bacteria are microorganisms that can harvest light energy using bacteriochlorophyll a to supplement their predominantly organotrophic metabolism. Growth enhancement by light has repeatedly been demonstrated in laboratory experiments with AAP isolates. However, the ecological advantage of light utilization is unclear, as it has never been proven in the natural environment. Here, we conducted manipulation experiments in the NW Mediterranean and found that AAP bacteria display high growth rates which are controlled to a large extent by intense grazing pressure and phosphorous availability. Foremost, we found that, contrarily to the bulk bacterioplakton, AAP bacteria display higher growth rates when incubated under light-dark cycles than in complete darkness. These results represent the first direct evidence that natural populations of marine AAP bacteria can be stimulated by light.

Multicolor immunoassay is a powerful tool for rapid analysis without the use of bulky instruments owing to various color conversions, which is suitable for on-site visual analysis for pesticides. Herein, this study developed a multicolor immunoassay for the rapid detection of isocarbophos. After competitive immunoassay, the secondary antibody (GAM-ALP) catalyzed ascorbyl-2-phosphate (AAP) into ascorbic acid (AA).

The aim of this study was to investigate the frequency of sasX, arginine catabolic mobile element (ACME) genes, biofilm formation and some biofilm related virulence factor genes in causative and contaminant coagulase negative staphylococci (CNS) strains isolated from blood cultures. Of the 150 CNS strains included in the study, 50 were grouped as infectious agents and 100 as contaminants. Biofilm formation of the strains was investigated by microplate method and the presence of sasX, ACME, mecA and biofilm associated virulence factor genes icaA, icaD, aap, bhp and IS256 were investigated by inhouse polymerase chain reaction method.

The purpose of this study was to explore the inhibitory effect of andrographolide on the expression of key regulatory genes involved in the biofilm formation of Staphylococcus epidermidis (SE). Taking the film-producing strain Staphylococcus epidermidis SE1457 as the research object, the effect of andrographolide on the formation of Staphylococcus epidermidis biofilms was analyzed via crystal violet staining, and biofilm models of SE adhesion, aggregation and maturity were established in vitro. RT‒PCR was used to detect the effects of the expression of icaA-, atlE-, aap- and luxS-related genes of andrographolide on biofilm formation in SE.

Background: Egg-based inactivated quadrivalent seasonal influenza vaccine (eIIV4), cell culture-based inactivated quadrivalent seasonal influenza vaccine (ccIIV4), and recombinant haemagglutinin (HA)-based quadrivalent seasonal influenza vaccine (RIV4) have been licensed for use in the USA. In this study, we used antigen-specific serum proteomics analysis to assess how the molecular composition and qualities of the serological antibody repertoires differ after seasonal influenza immunisation by each of the three vaccines and how different vaccination platforms affect the HA binding affinity and breadth of the serum antibodies that comprise the polyclonal response.
Methods: In this comparative, prospective, observational cohort study, we included female US health-care personnel (mean age 47·6 years [SD 8]) who received a single dose of RIV4, eIIV4, or ccIIV4 during the 2018-19 influenza season at Baylor Scott & White Health (Temple, TX, USA).

The ubiquitous skin colonist Staphylococcus epidermidis elicits a CD8 T cell response pre-emptively, in the absence of an infection. However, the scope and purpose of this anti-commensal immune program are not well defined, limiting our ability to harness it therapeutically. Here, we show that this colonist also induces a potent, durable, and specific antibody response that is conserved in humans and non-human primates.
