Increasing aluminum (Al) concentrations in aquatic habitats as a result of anthropogenic acidification and industrialization is a global issue. Moreover, in extensive areas of the humid tropics and subtropics, high Al concentrations in freshwater are observed because of both naturally low pH and high Al concentrations in soil. Al increases production of reactive oxygen species and enhances oxidative damage in mammals. However, no studies have examined the effect of environmentally relevant concentrations of Al at low pH on oxidative stress in fish. This study assessed Al-induced effects on enzymatic and non-enzymatic antioxidants, lipid peroxidation, and on expression of oxidative stress-related genes at low pH using Japanese Medaka (Oryzias latipes). Larval fish were exposed to dissolved Al concentrations of 0, 1.7, 6.2 and 16.7μgL for 4days at pH5.3 in soft water. Al caused a significant reduction in activity of glutathione peroxidase at 6.2 and 16.7μgL, and of glutathione reductase at 16.7μgL in whole body homogenates. No changes were observed in the expression of the glutathione peroxidase gene, and expression levels of the glutathione reductase gene were too low to be quantitated. Even though there was an overall decrease in the activity of catalase and in the concentration of glutathione, differences were not significant compared to the control. Changes in lipid peroxidation were not found. This study showed that exposure to environmentally relevant concentrations of Al at low pH impairs antioxidant defense mechanisms of Medaka.

Background: The gray snapper (Lutjanus griseus) is a marine reef fish commonly found in coastal and shelf waters of the tropical and subtropical western Atlantic Ocean. In this work, a draft reference genome was developed to support population genomic studies of gray snapper needed to assist with conservation and fisheries management efforts.
Methods And Results: Hybrid assembly of PacBio and Illumina sequencing reads yielded a 1,003,098,032 bp reference across 2039 scaffolds with N50 and L50 values of 1,691,591 bp and 163 scaffolds, respectively.

The recent discovery of nonvisual photoreceptors in various organs has raised expectations for uncovering their roles and underlying mechanisms. In this work, we identified a previously unrecognized hormone-releasing mechanism in the pituitary of the Japanese rice fish (medaka) induced by light. Ca imaging analysis revealed that melanotrophs, a type of pituitary endocrine cell that secretes melanocyte-stimulating hormone, robustly increase the concentration of intracellular Ca during short-wavelength light exposure.

The clustered regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats (CRISPR)/CRISPR-associated protein 9 (Cas9) system, belonging to the type II CRISPR/Cas system, is an effective gene-editing tool widely used in different organisms, but the size of Cas9 (SpCas9) is quite large (4.3 kb), which is not convenient for vector delivery. In this study, we used a codon-optimized Cas9 (SaCas9) system to edit the tyrosinase (, oculocutaneous albinism II (), and paired box 6.

To optimize the utilization of the sea star , which has demonstrated potential pharmaceutical properties in Chinese folk medicine, ten glycosides of polyhydroxy steroids, pectiniferosides A-J (-), were isolated and characterized. These compounds possess 3β, 6α, 8, 15α (or β), 16β-pentahydroxycholestane aglycones with sulfated and (or) methylated monosaccharides. The chemical structures of - were determined using NMR spectroscopy and HR-ESI-MS.

In the context of increasing pollution pressure on aquatic ecosystems, it is essential to improve our knowledge of habitat quality and its suitability for organisms. It is particularly relevant to better integrate early life stages of fish into pollution biomonitoring programs, as they are reliable indicators of ecosystem integrity and because of their high sensitivity to pollutants. To avoid the influence of environmental parameters on their development, a lab-on-field approach, called the ex-situ exposure method, was developed.
