Objective: Three-dimensional (3D) printing technology presents a promising avenue for the development of affordable neurosurgical simulation models, addressing many challenges related to the use of cadavers, animal models, and direct patient engagement. The aim of this study is to introduce and evaluate a new high-fidelity neurosurgical simulation model targeted for both burr hole and craniotomy procedures.
Methods: 12 different 3D-printed skull models were manufactured using 5 different materials (polyether ether ketone, White Resin, Rigid 10K, Bone, and Skull) from 3 different 3D print processes (fused filament fabrication, stereolithography [SLA], and material jetting).

Vat photopolymerization (VP) Additive Manufacturing (AM), in which UV light is selectively applied to cure photo-active polymers into complex geometries with micron-scale resolution, has a limited selection of aliphatic thermoset materials that exhibit relatively poor thermal performance. Ring-opening dianhydrides with acrylate-containing nucleophiles yielded diacrylate ester-dicarboxylic acids that enabled photo-active polyimide (PI) precursors, termed polysalts, upon neutralization with an aromatic diamine in solution. In situ FTIR spectroscopy coupled with a solution and photo-rheological measurements revealed a previously unknown time-dependent instability of 4,4'-oxydianiline (ODA) polysalts due to an aza-Michael addition.

Background: 3-dimensional (3D) printing carries a genuine potential for pre-operative planning in neurosurgery. Entry-level 3D printers offer practicality in low resource settings, but are often limited by the range of filament materials as well as the capability of open-source segmentation software.
Objective: We intended to demonstrate that 3D printing of neuroanatomical structures is possible using an entry-level 3D printer equipped with the direct drive (DD) modification, which supported flexible filaments, with the models segmented using an open-source software.
