Owing to its high conductivity, solution processability, mechanical flexibility, and transparency, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene):poly(styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) has been extensively explored for use in functional devices including solar cells, sensors, light-emitting diodes, and supercapacitors. The ability to fabricate patterned PEDOT:PSS on a solid substrate is of significant importance to develop practical applications of this conducting polymer. Herein, we describe a new approach to obtain PEDOT:PSS patterns that are based on a polymerizable supramolecular concept. Specifically, we found that UV irradiation of a photopolymerizable diacetylene containing PEDOT:PSS film followed by development in deionized water and subsequent treatment with sulfuric acid (glass and silicon wafer) or formic acid (PET) produces micron-sized PEDOT:PSS patterns on solid substrates. The newly designed photolithographic method, which can be employed to generate highly conductive (>1000 S/cm) PEDOT:PSS patterns, has many advantages including the use of aqueous process conditions, a reduced number of process steps, and no requirement for plasma etching procedures.

An electro- and optically favorable quaternary nanocomposite film was produced by solution-casting nickel oxide nanoparticles (NiO NPs) into polyvinyl alcohol (PVA), polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP), and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate (PEDOT/PSS). Based on transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray diffraction (XRD) observations, the synthesized NiO NPs have a cubic phase and a diameter between 10 and 45 nm. The complexity and interactions observed through XRD patterns, UV-visible spectra, and FTIR measurements suggest that the NPs are not just dispersed within the polymer matrix, but are interacting with it, leading to enhanced dielectric properties and AC electrical conductivity.

We present the change of light absorption of cyanobacteria in response to externally applied electrical polarization. Specifically, we studied the relation between electrical polarization and changes in light absorbance for a biophotoelectrode assembly comprising boron-doped diamond as semiconducting electrode and live PCC 8005 trichomes embedded in either polysaccharide (agar) or conductive conjugated polymer (PEDOT-PSS) matrices. Our study involves the monitoring of cyanobacterial absorbance and the measurement of photocurrents at varying wavelengths of illumination for switched electric fields, i.

Carbon nanotube (CNT) films are extensively researched as a promising material for wearable thermoelectric generators (TEGs) owing to their good flexibility and high thermoelectric conversion ability. Miniaturizing a pair of p- and n-type thermocouples and increasing the number of repeating elements can effectively increase the power of TEGs. However, conventional p-n patterning methods, such as dipping and printing, have a coarse resolution at the submillimeter level, thereby limiting the miniaturization rate.

This manuscript addresses the need for new soft biomaterials that can be fabricated on the surface of microelectrodes to reduce the mechanical mismatch between biological tissues and electrodes and improve the performance at the neural interface. By electrochemical polymerization of poly(3,4-dioxythiophene) (PEDOT)/polystyrene sulfonate (PSS) through a gelatin methacrylate (GelMA) hydrogel, we demonstrate the synthesis of a conducting polymer hydrogel (CPH) to meet the performance criteria of bioelectrodes. The hybrid material can be photolithographically patterned and covalently attached to gold microelectrodes, forming an interpenetrating network, as confirmed by infrared spectroscopy.
