We used whole-genome sequencing to characterize 199 nonvaccine serotype 35B pneumococcal strains that caused invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) in the United States during 2015-2016 and related these findings to previous serotype 35B IPD data obtained by Active Bacterial Core surveillance. Penicillin-nonsusceptible 35B IPD increased during post-pneumococcal 7-valent conjugate vaccine years (2001-2009) and increased further after implementation of pneumococcal 13-valent conjugate vaccine in 2010. This increase was caused primarily by the 35B/sequence type (ST) 558 lineage. 35B/ST558 and vaccine serotype 9V/ST156 lineages were implicated as cps35B donor and recipient, respectively, for a single capsular switch event that generated emergent 35B/ST156 progeny in 6 states during 2015-2016. Three additional capsular switch 35B variants were identified, 2 of which also involved 35B/ST558 as cps35B donor. Spread of 35B/ST156 is of concern in view of past global predominance of pathogenic ST156 vaccine serotype strains. Protection against serotype 35B should be considered in next-generation pneumococcal vaccines.
Invasive pneumococcal disease (IPD) is a major cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, particularly in the pediatric population (children and infants), with high rates of hospitalization and death. This study aimed to create and validate a classifier for serotyping using Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy as a rapid alternative to the classical serotyping technique. In this study, a database comprising 76 clinical isolates, including 18 serotypes (predominantly serotypes 19A, 6C, and 3) of from pediatric patients with IPD, was tested at a tertiary pediatric hospital in southern Brazil during 2016-2023.
We herein report a case of bacterial meningitis and bacteremia in a 3-month-old boy caused by Streptococcus pneumoniae serotype 35B multidrug resistance. Intravenous ampicillin was administered on admission. However, when pneumococcal meningitis was suspected, the antibiotic treatment was changed to ceftriaxone (CTRX) and vancomycin (VCM).
Background: The prevalence of serotypes and antimicrobial resistance of was characterized among children thirteen years after the licensure of the pneumococcal conjugate vaccine (PCV) in Japan.
Methods: A total of 353 pneumococcal isolates were collected from Japanese children between March and July 2023. All the isolates were serotyped using genetic methods and tested for susceptibility to 14 antimicrobial agents.
Background: Non-vaccine serotype (NVT) pneumococcal pneumonia in Japan has increased with the spread of pneumococcal vaccinations. However, there is no data regarding the clinical background and antimicrobial susceptibility of NVT isolates compared with those of vaccine serotype (VT) isolates in adult pneumococcal pneumonia.
Methods: The serotypes and antimicrobial susceptibilities of pneumococcal isolates obtained from patients with pneumonia at the University of Occupational and Environmental Health, Japan, from January 2011 to December 2020 were retrospectively evaluated along with the patients' clinical information.
This narrative review describes pneumococcal serotype prevalence for invasive disease and carriage and antibiotic resistance among specimens collected from children in countries across South and Southeast Asia from 2012 to 2024. Literature search retrieved 326 articles; 96 were included. The prevalence of pneumococcal serotypes varied geographically and over time after introduction of pneumococcal conjugate vaccine.
