Deriving biomedical diagnostics from NMR spectroscopic data.

Published: March 2011

Biomedical spectroscopic experiments generate large volumes of data. For accurate, robust diagnostic tools the data must be analyzed for only a few characteristic observations per subject, and a large number of subjects must be studied. We describe here two of the current data analytic approaches applied to this problem: SIMCA (principal component analysis, partial least squares), and the statistical classification strategy (SCS). We demonstrate the application of the SCS by three examples of its use in analyzing H NMR spectra: screening for colon cancer, characterization of thyroid cancer, and distinguishing cancer from cholangitis in the biliary tract.

Esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) and esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC) are distinct histological subtypes of esophageal cancer. The tumor microenvironment of each subtype significantly influences the efficacy of immunotherapy. However, the characteristics of the tumor microenvironments of both subtypes, as well as their specific impacts on immunotherapy outcomes, still require further elucidation.

January 2025

School of Agriculture and Food Science, UCD Institute of Food and Health, University College Dublin, Dublin, Ireland.

Purpose: Provision of nutrition information is mandated for packaged foods, but few countries regulate serving sizes. Our objective was to develop a methodology to establish globally consistent portion size recommendations for both nutrient-dense and discretionary foods.

Methods: A stepwise systematic approach incorporated portion values from serving size regulations (n = 10), food-based dietary guidelines (FBDG; n = 90, aggregated into 6 regions), and reported food intakes from Europe and Australia.

Shandong Laboratory of Biomedical Materials Engineering, Success Bio-Tech Co., Ltd., Jinan, China.

Osteoarthritis (OA) is a common joint disease, which is mainly characterized by the degeneration of articular cartilage, inflammation of the synovial membrane of the joint, and changes in the surrounding bone tissue. With the increase of age and weight, the incidence of OA gradually increases, which seriously affects the quality of life of patients. The primary pharmacological treatments for OA include analgesics and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Department of Radiology, miami, FL, USA.

Background: Clearance of brain toxins occurs during sleep, although the mechanism remains unknown. Previous studies implied that the intracranial aqueductal cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) oscillations are involved, but no mechanism was suggested. The rationale for focusing on the aqueductal CSF oscillations is unclear.
