Since the revolutionary discovery that phospholipids can form closed bilayered structures in aqueous systems, the study of liposomes has become a very interesting area of research. The versatility and amazing biocompatibility of liposomes has resulted in their wide-spread use in many scientific fields, and many of their applications, especially in medicine, have yielded breakthroughs in recent decades. Specifically, their easy preparation and various structural aspects have given rise to broadly usable methodologies to internalize different compounds, with either lipophilic or hydrophilic properties. The study of compounds with potential biotechnological application(s) is generally related to evaluation and risk assessment of the possible cytotoxic or therapeutic effects of the compound under study. In most cases, undesirable side-effects are associated with an interaction of the liposome with the cell membrane and/or its absorption and subsequent interaction with a cellular biomolecule. Liposomal carrier systems have an unprecedented potential for delivering bioactive substances to specific molecular targets due to their biocompatibility, biodegradability and low toxicity. Liposomes are therefore considered to be an invaluable asset in applied biotechnology studies due to their potential for interaction with both hydrophilic and lipophilic compounds.

Here, we report a case of Epstein-Barr virus-positive central nervous system-post-transplant lymphoproliferative disorder (CNS-PTLD) patient who failed to achieve complete metabolic remission (CMR) after successively trying a methotrexate-based regimen combined with orelabrutinib or whole-brain radiotherapy and encountered intracranial hemorrhage during orelabrutinib treatment. Ultimately, the patient achieved CMR after one cycle of acalabrutinib in combination with temozolomide, teniposide, liposomal doxorubicin, dexamethasone, and rituximab (TEDDi-R). Following another cycle of TEDDi-R treatment, he has been receiving acalabrutinib maintenance up to now and remained in CMR.

From X- To J-Aggregation: Subtly Managing Intermolecular Interactions for Superior Phototheranostics with Precise 1064 nm Excitation.

Adv Healthc Mater

January 2025

College of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering and Jiangxi Provincial Key Laboratory of Functional Crystalline Materials Chemistry, Nanchang University, Nanchang, 330031, China.

The stacking mode in aggregate state results from a delicate balance of supramolecular interactions, which closely affects the optoelectronic properties of organic π-conjugated systems. Then, managing these interactions is crucial for advancing phototheranostics, yet remains challenging. A subtle strategy involving peripheral phenyl groups is debuted herein to transform X-aggregated SQ-H into J-aggregated SQ-Ph, reorienting intermolecular dipole interactions while rationally modulating π-π interactions.

Breast cancer continues to pose a significant global health challenge, with conventional therapies frequently hindered by resistance mechanisms and undesirable side effects. This review investigates the therapeutic potential of polyphenols-naturally occurring compounds recognized for their antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and anti-cancer properties-as alternative or complementary treatments for breast cancer. We examine the molecular pathways through which polyphenols exert their effects, including their influence on oxidative stress modulation, inflammatory responses, cellular proliferation, apoptosis, and estrogen receptor signalling.

Liposomal propolis loaded xanthan gum-salep hydrogels: Preparation, characterization, and in vitro bioaccessibility of phenolics.

Int J Biol Macromol

January 2025

Food Eng. Department, Chemical and Metallurgical Engineering Faculty, Yildiz Technical University, 34210 Istanbul, Turkiye. Electronic address:

Liposomes are gaining interest in food and pharmaceutical applications due to their biocompatibility and non-toxicity. However, they suffer from low colloidal stability, leakage of encapsulated substances, and poor resistance to intestinal digestive conditions. To address these issues, propolis extract (PE) was encapsulated within a hybrid system combining liposomes and hydrogels.
