The aim of this retrospective multicentric case series is to describe the CT findings of ovarian neoplasia in dogs. Twenty dogs with pre- and postcontrast CT exams and cytological/histological diagnosis of ovarian neoplasia were included. Five dogs presented with bilateral tumors, for a total of 25 neoplasms: 15 carcinomas (4 bilateral), 4 granulosa cell tumors, 2 poorly differentiated malignant neoplasia (bilateral), 2 luteomas, 1 teratoma, 1 dysgerminoma.

Ovarian cancer is the deadliest gynecological malignancy with a high prevalence of transcoelomic metastasis. Metastasis is a multi-step process and only a small percentage of cancer cells, metastasis-initiating cells (MICs), have the capacity to finally establish metastatic lesions. These MICs maintain a certain level of stemness that allows them to differentiate into other cell types with distinct transcriptomic profiles and swiftly adapt to external stresses.

Ovarian cancer is amongst the most morbid of gynecological malignancies due to its diagnosis at an advanced stage, a transcoelomic mode of metastasis, and rapid transition to chemotherapeutic resistance. Like all other malignancies, the progression of ovarian cancer may be interpreted as an emergent outcome of the conflict between metastasizing cancer cells and the natural defense mounted by microenvironmental barriers to such migration. Here, we asked whether senescence in coelom-lining mesothelia, brought about by drug exposure, affects their interaction with disseminated ovarian cancer cells.

High-grade serous ovarian cancer (HGSOC) is the deadliest gynecological malignancy. The most common form of metastatic spread of HGSOC is transcoelomic dissemination. In this process, detached cells from the primary tumor aggregate as tumorspheres and promote the accumulation of peritoneal ascites.
