Objectives The objective of this study was to discuss jinn possession in Muslim culture, and the importance of understanding cultural differences in mental health. Conclusion It is important to understand cultural and religious differences in psychiatry, as it affects the way patients perceive and attribute symptoms. It also helps clinicians to reach an accurate diagnosis and provide appropriate treatments. Beliefs about jinn possession should not automatically be regarded as delusional. In alleged cases of jinn possession, clinicians should consider all the biopsychosocial, cultural and spiritual factors that are unique to the individual. Further research is still needed in this area.

The spiritual possession phenomenon (SPP), is a complex transnosological, transcultural syndrome, which is based on the patients' perception that some spiritual entity (spirit, demon, jinn, shaitan, «ikotka», dybbuk, Buddha, etc.) is influencing or possessing them. Modern classifications of diseases, aimed at expanding our ideas about the distinction between the norm and pathology of mental disorders, do not contribute to a clear psychopathological differentiation of SPP, the determination of its nosological affiliation and the choice of appropriate therapeutic tactics for these conditions.

In this article, parents' supernatural beliefs on causes of birth defects were reviewed and discussed from Islamic perspective to draw attention to the importance of supernatural powers in Islamic teachings. Birth defects have been known since ancient ages and many people with different birth defects, who lived in antiquity, have been described. Although reasons for birth defects given in early medieval, 13th, 16th, and 21st centuries medical texts showed differences, numerous people in different cultures of the world have believed the effects of supernatural powers can cause birth defects since early medieval ages.
