Stable benzotriazinyl radicals (Blatter's radicals) recently attracted considerable interest as building blocks for functional materials. The existing strategies to derivatize Blatter's radicals are limited, however, and synthetic routes are complex. Here, we report that an inexpensive, commercially available, analytical reagent Nitron undergoes a previously unrecognized transformation in wet acetonitrile in the presence of air to yield a new Blatter-type radical with an amide group replacing a phenyl at the C(3)-position. This one-pot reaction of Nitron provides access to a range of previously inaccessible triazinyl radicals with excellent benchtop stabilities. Mechanistic investigation suggests that the reaction starts with a hydrolytic cleavage of the triazole ring followed by oxidative cyclization. Several derivatives of Nitron were prepared and converted into Blatter-type radicals to test the synthetic value of the new reaction. These results significantly expand the scope of using functionalized benzotriazinyls as stable radical building blocks.

Diradicals based on the Blatter units and connected by acetylene and alkene spacers have been prepared. All the molecules show sizably large diradical character and low energy singlet-triplet gaps. Their photo-physical properties concerning their lowest energy excited state have been studied in detail by steady-state and time-resolved absorption spectroscopy.

Nitrogen oxides are adverse poisonous gases present in the atmosphere and having detrimental effects on the human health and environment. In this work, we propose a new type of mesoporous materials capable of capturing nitrogen monoxide (NO) from air. The designed material combines the robust Santa Barbara Amorphous-15 silica scaffold and ultrastable Blatter-type radicals acting as NO traps.

Overhauser dynamic nuclear polarization (O-DNP) refers to a microwave-assisted process where an unpaired electron's ( a radical) spin polarization is transferred to surrounding nuclei in solution, thus increasing the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) signal intensity of a given substance by several orders of magnitude. The presence of the unpaired electrons, which induces relaxation of the resulting hyperpolarized state when the radiation is halted, can be avoided by electrochemically removing the radicals on demand. We report the use of Blatter-type (benzo[][1,2,4]triazinyl) radicals as polarizing agents, potentially opening the way to highly tunable radicals for electrochemical DNP.
