Background: Adnexal skin tumors are a heterogeneous group of uncommon tumors usually misdiagnosed clinically due to a huge variety of types and their variants. Histopathology usually helps in establishing the diagnosis.

Aims: The study was undertaken to analyze the morphological, clinical, and histological features of adnexal tumors (ATs) of the skin at our center over a period of 4 years.

Subjects And Methods: retrospective study was conducted over a period of 4 years (April 2010-March 2014), comprising 25 ATs of skin diagnosed in the Department of Pathology, Hamdard Institute of Medical Sciences and Research, Jamia Hamdard, New Delhi. All the consecutively reported AT cases were reviewed and reclassified as AT arising from sebaceous glands, hair follicles, or sweat glands. The concordance of clinical and histopathological diagnosis was also assessed.

Results: Most of the ATs were benign (24/25) with head and neck being the most common location (72%). Nearly 56% of the tumors exhibited sweat gland differentiation, 28% hair follicle differentiation, and sebaceous gland tumors accounted for 16%. The most common varieties of tumors encountered in the present study included hidradenoma papilliferum and pilomatricoma. The concordance between clinical and histopathological diagnosis was found to be 50% approximately.

Conclusions: ATs of the skin are rare neoplasms with benign tumors being far more common. They are often misdiagnosed clinically, so histopathology remains the gold standard for establishing an accurate diagnosis of skin ATs.

Time trends of cancer incidence in young adults (20-49 years) in Italy. A population - based study, 2008-2017.

November 2024

Agenzia di Tutela della Salute della Montagna Cancer Registry, Sondrio.

Article Synopsis
  • The study evaluates cancer incidence trends from 2008-2017 in Italy among individuals aged 20-49, utilizing data from 20 cancer registries that cover about one-third of the population.
  • Results show that cancer rates were nearly double for women compared to men, particularly due to breast and thyroid cancers, with significant variations in incidence trends across different cancer types.
  • The findings indicate no consistent increase for early-onset cancers in Italy, with rising rates for some cancers offset by declines in others, underscoring the need for preventive measures and careful screening strategies.

Background: For procedural education, the shift from the traditional apprenticeship model to simulation-based mastery has become increasingly accepted as the gold standard and has underscored the importance of high-fidelity, cost-effective training options. However, cost-effective pleural procedure simulators providing both realistic haptic feedback and ultrasound compatibility are lacking.

Objective: We aimed to create a pleural procedure simulator with characteristics of human tissue, at low cost and with ultrasound compatibility.

Background: Arterial tortuosity syndrome is a rare Autosomal recessive disease that leads to a loss of function of the connective tissues of the body, this happens due to a mutation in the solute carrier family 2 member 10 (SLC2A10) gene. ATS is more likely to occur in Large and medium-sized arteries including the aorta and pulmonary arteries. This syndrome causes the arteries to be elongated and tortuous, This tortuosity disturbs the blood circulation resulting in stenosis and lack of blood flow to organs and this chronic turbulent flow increases the risk of aneurysm development, dissection and ischemic events.

Background: Management of PICC dressing can be performed at home by the patient through adequate training and telenursing. This trial verifies that the incidence of catheter-related complications in home patients, assisted by telenursing, is not greater than that observed in outpatients.

Methods: This clinical trial is composed of 72 patients with malignant tumors who underwent long-term chemotherapy with PICC insertion.

Article Synopsis
  • Immune checkpoint inhibitor (ICI) therapy has significantly advanced cancer treatment but is often complicated by immune-related adverse events like checkpoint inhibitor colitis (irColitis).
  • A study profiling around 300,000 cells from patients with irColitis uncovered key immune cell expansions and molecular changes in the colon mucosa and blood, highlighting the complexity of the condition.
  • Findings indicate that specific T cells and epithelial interactions are crucial for understanding irColitis and may lead to new therapeutic approaches for managing this side effect of ICI therapy.
