We herein opened up a facile and green strategy for the fabrication of bright orange-fluorescent gold-silver nanoclusters (AuAgNCs@ew, GSNCs) by a one-pot synthesis at a vital molar ratio of Au/Ag precursors in the egg white protein matrix using microwave-assisted method. The prepared GSNCs exhibited enhanced fluorescence with fluorescent quantum yield of 5.4%, which is dependent on gold and silver synergies. Due to the advantageous superiority of low-toxicity, excellent stability and satisfactory fluorescence, the as-prepared GSNCs has been successfully used in cell imaging and temperature sensing. More strikingly, the GSNCs emerged strong response to CN with rapid, selective, and ultrasensitive characteristics. The detection limit was approximately 138nM, which is nearly 20 times lower than the maximum level (2700nM) of CN in drinking water set up by the World Health Organization (WHO). In addition, the as-prepared GSNCs could be applied to detecting real samples with minimum interference. Our findings showed that this new GSNCs probe is eco-friendly and large-scale development for potential applications including the detection of environmental pollution and bioimaging.

The grave threat posed by heavy metals and food hazards has increased the urgency of rapid and precise detection for food security and human health. Efficient multivariate sensing probes are imperatively required for sensing heavy metals and tumor markers, which are still facing great challenge in terms of multi-functional integration. Here, bimetallic gold-silver nanoclusters (NG-AuAgNCs) were developed with unique aggregation-induced-emission (AIE) property and peroxidase (POD) mimicking activity towards the efficient multivariate sensing via optimization of the precursors.

Mycotoxin contamination currently poses a significant concern and presents a major challenge to global food safety management. In this research, gold‑silver nanoclusters (Au-AgNCs) were utilized as platforms for electrogenerated chemiluminescence (ECL) and electrochemical (EC) responses, while polyaniline-coated cobalt tetraoxide and gold (PANI@CoO/AuNPs) served as bifunctional probes with intelligently modulated light/electric signals to develop a dual mode adaptor sensor for sensitive detection of alternariol (AOH). The sensor's benefits are evident in three areas:(1) Bandgap modulation allows Au-Ag to exhibit enhanced light/electric response;(2) PANI@CoO/AuNPs exhibit both ECL quenching effects and the capability to activate KHSO, along with improved electrical conductivity, which collectively improves the sensor's detection performance;(3) The dual-channel signal outputs significantly reduce the risk of false detections.

Expanding the family of fluorescent metal clusters beyond gold, silver, and copper has always been an issue for researchers to solve. In this study, a novel type of cysteine-capped nickel nanoclusters (Cys-Ni NCs) with bright turquoise emission was developed. The as-synthesized Ni NCs showed aggregation-induced emission enhancement (AIEE) properties across Cd and various polar organic solvents.

Alloying is an effective method for modulating metal nanoclusters to enrich their structural diversity and physicochemical properties. Recent investigations have demonstrated that polyoxometalates (POMs) can act as effective multidentate ligands for silver (Ag) nanoclusters to endow them with synergistic properties, reactivity, catalytic properties, and stability. However, the application of POMs as ligands has been confined predominantly to monometallic nanoclusters.

To address the need for facile, rapid detection of pathogens in water supplies, a fluorescent sensing array platform based on antibiotic-stabilized metal nanoclusters was developed for the multiplex detection of pathogens. Using five common antibiotics, eight different nanoclusters (NCs) were synthesized including ampicillin stabilized copper NCs, cefepime stabilized gold and copper NCs, kanamycin stabilized gold and copper NCs, lysozyme stabilized gold NCs, and vancomycin stabilized gold/silver and copper NCs. Based on the different interaction of each NC with the bacteria strains, unique patterns were generated.
