Triethanolamine (TEOA) has been often used as a hole-scavenger in dye-sensitized semiconductor photocatalytic systems. However, the femtosecond time-resolved kinetics of the interaction between a sensitized dye and TEOA has not been reported in literatures. Herein, we selected four commonly used xanthene dyes, such as fluorescein, dibromofluorescein, eosin Y, and erythrosine B, and studied their ultrafast fluorescence quenching dynamics in the presence of TEOA in aqueous solution, respectively, by using both femtosecond transient absorption and time-resolved fluorescence measurements. We obtained the electron transfer rate from TEOA to each photoexcited xanthene dye in 2.0 M TEOA solution. We also obtained the intersystem crossing rate of each xanthene dye in aqueous solution with fluorescence quantum yield and lifetime measurements. Finally we found that TEOA mainly interacts with the singlet excited-state of fluorescein, dibromofluorescein, and eosin Y, and that TEOA can interact with both the singlet and triplet excited-states of erythrosine B in high concentration of TEOA aqueous solution.

This paper presented the preparation, characterization, and adsorption properties of Brazil nut shell activated carbon for catechol removal from aqueous solutions. The equilibrium adsorption of catechol molecules on this activated was experimentally quantified at pH 6 and temperatures ranging from 25 to 55 °C, and at 25 °C and pH ranging from 6 to 10. These results were utilized to elucidate the role of surface functionalities through statistical physics calculations.

Bridged emulsion gels from polymer-nanoparticle enabling large-amount biomedical encapsulation and functionalization.

Nat Commun

December 2024

Key Laboratory of Materials Chemistry for Energy Conversion and Storage of Ministry of Education (HUST), School of Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Huazhong University of Science and Technology (HUST), Wuhan, 430074, China.

Large-amount encapsulation and subsequent expressing are common characteristics for many biomedical applications, such as cosmetic creams and medical ointments. Emulsion gels can accomplish that, but often undergo exclusive, complex, multiple synthesis steps, showing extremely laborious and non-universal. The method here is simple via precisely interfacial engineering in homogenizing a nanoparticle aqueous dispersion and a polymer oil solution, gaining interfacial 45° three-phase-contact-angle for the nanoparticle that can bridge across oil emulsions' interfaces and ultimately form interconnected macroscopic networks.

Recycling e-waste into gold-loaded covalent organic framework catalysts for terminal alkyne carboxylation.

The rising demand for gold requires innovative methods for its recovery from e-waste. Here we present the synthesis of two tetrazine-based vinyl-linked covalent organic frameworks: TTF-COF and TPE-COF that adsorb gold ions and nanoparticles and catalyze the carboxylation of terminal alkynes. These covalent organic frameworks have low band gaps and high photocurrent responses.

Efficient removal of Sb(III) from aqueous solution using TiO precipitated onto waste herb-residue biochar.

College of Resources and Environmental Engineering, Guizhou University, Guiyang, People's Republic of China.

Increasing antimony (Sb) pollution has become a global concern, but there is still a lack of economically efficient adsorbents for its remediation. In this study, a novel remediation material was developed by precipitating TiO onto waste herb-residue biochar (named TBC). The effectiveness and adsorption mechanisms of the material for Sb(III) removal were investigated through adsorption experiments, and the enhancement pathway of traditional herb decoction on the effectiveness of modified biochar was analyzed.
