Uncovering grain-scale mechanisms that underlie the disorder-order transition in assemblies of dissipative, athermal particles is a fundamental problem with technological relevance. To date, the study of granular crystallization has mainly focussed on the symmetry of crystalline patterns while their emergence and growth from irregular clusters of grains remains largely unexplored. Here crystallization of three-dimensional packings of frictional spheres is studied at the grain-scale using X-ray tomography and persistent homology. The latter produces a map of the topological configurations of grains within static partially crystallized packings. Using numerical simulations, we show that similar maps are measured dynamically during the melting of a perfect crystal. This map encodes new information on the formation process of tetrahedral and octahedral pores, the building blocks of perfect crystals. Four key formation mechanisms of these pores reproduce the main changes of the map during crystallization and provide continuous deformation pathways representative of the crystallization dynamics.

Mineral scaling and scaling-induced wetting are critical issues in membrane distillation (MD) during treatment of saline wastewaters. Gypsum scaling and scaling-induced wetting in MD were successfully regulated by heterogeneous crystallization with in-line granular filtration in this study. Stable water recovery increased from 32.

Identical, inelastic spheres crystallize when sheared between two parallel, bumpy planes under a constant load larger than a minimum value. We investigate the effect of the inter-particle friction coefficient of the sheared particles on the flow dynamics and the crystallization process with discrete element simulations. If the imposed load is about the minimum value to observe crystallization in frictionless spheres, adding small friction to the granular assembly results in a shear band adjacent to one of the planes and one crystallized region, where a plug flow is observed.

This study integrates partial denitrification/Anammox (PD/A) with hydroxyapatite (HAP) crystallization in a single reactor, achieving simultaneous nitrogen and phosphorus removal along with phosphorus recovery. By adjusting pH, sludge concentration, low COD/TN ratio, and applying moderate dissolved oxygen stress, the system operated stably and promoted the synergistic growth of HAP and biomass. Results showed a nitrogen removal efficiency (NRE) of 94.

This paper proposes a method for synthesizing granular ZSM-23 zeolite with a high degree of crystallinity and hierarchical porous structure. This method is based on crystallizing granules composed of powdered ZSM-23 zeolite and a specially prepared amorphous aluminosilicate. It has been shown that these granules have superior mechanical strength compared to granular zeolite-containing materials, which are made from a mixture of ZSM-23 zeolite crystals and AlO.
