The Effect of Adherence to a Tai Chi Intervention on Quality of Life of Older People Living With Dementia.

J Aging Phys Act

January 2025

Bournemouth University Clinical Research Unit, Faculty of Health & Social Sciences, Bournemouth University, Poole, United Kingdom.

Background/objectives: Adherence to exercise programs is required to reap their established benefits and to sustain Quality of Life (QoL). This study explored People Living with Dementia's (PLWD) adherence to a Tai Chi exercise program and its effects on their QoL. The study included assessment of factors affecting adherence to a Tai Chi exercise intervention, causes of nonadherence, and effect of adherence on PLWD's QoL.

Basic Science and Pathogenesis.

Alzheimers Dement

December 2024

Division of Neurogeriatrics, Center for Alzheimer Research, Department of Neurobiology, Care Sciences and Society (NVS), Karolinska Institutet, Stockholm, Sweden.

Background: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is associated with synaptic and memory dysfunction. A pathological hallmark of the disease is reactive astrogliosis, with reactive astrocytes surrounding amyloid plaques in the brain. Astrocytes have also been shown to be actively involved in disease progression, nevertheless, mechanistic information about their role in synaptic transmission during AD pathology is lacking.

Background: Despite significant advancements in the development of blood biomarkers for AD, challenges persist due to the complex interplay of genetic and environmental risk factors in AD pathogenesis. Epigenetic processes, including non-coding RNAs and especially microRNAs (miRs), have emerged as important players in the molecular mechanisms underlying neurodegenerative diseases. MiRs have the ability to fine-tune gene expression and proteostasis, and microRNAome profiling in liquid biopsies is gaining increasing interest since changes in miR levels can indicate the presence of multiple pathologies.

Introduction And Hypothesis: The objective of our study is to investigate the presence of lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) and its correlation with the risk of falling in older women with cognitive frailty.

Methods: The descriptive study was conducted on 102 female older adults, 60 women were classed as cognitively frail and 42 as healthy. Women were classified as having mild cognitive impairment based on the Clinical Dementia Rating Scale and as frail based on the Clinical Frailty Scale.

Background: The Apolipoprotein E ε4 (APOE-ε4) allele is common in the population, but acts as the strongest genetic risk factor for late-onset Alzheimer's disease (AD). Despite the strength of the association, there is notable heterogeneity in the population including a strong modifying effect of genetic ancestry, with the APOE-ε4 allele showing a stronger association among individuals of European ancestry (EUR) compared to individuals of African ancestry (AFR). Given this heterogeneity, we sought to identify genetic modifiers of APOE-ε4 related to cognitive decline leveraging APOE-ε4 stratified and interaction genome-wide association analyses (GWAS).
