Published: July 2015

Case Summary: A 2-year-old, intact female domestic longhair cat was referred for surgical treatment after diagnosis of closed jaw locking secondarily to right temporomandibular joint ankylosis and left pseudoankylosis. The animal underwent successful surgical management with bilateral excision arthroplasty followed by interposition of a temporal superficial myofascial flap. Immediately after surgery, the full range of lower jaw movement was achieved and normal occlusion was maintained. Ankylosis did not recur in the 1 year postoperative follow-up period.

Relevance And Novel Information: A temporal myofascial flap could be considered as interposition material after temporomandibular joint arthroplasty to avoid postoperative re-ankylosis and mandibular drift. The main advantages of this flap are its autogenous origin, and the ability to maintain separation between the two bones, preserve mobility and disrupt new bone formation.

Oncoplastic Breast-Conserving Surgery for Upper Inner Quadrant Breast Cancer Using Pedicled Pectoralis Major Myofascial Flap.

Cancer Manag Res

December 2024

Breast Cancer Department, Zhejiang Cancer Hospital, Hangzhou Institute of Medicine (HIM), Chinese Academy of Sciences, Hangzhou, Zhejiang, 310022, People's Republic of China.

Background: Oncoplastic breast-conserving surgery (OBCS) has emerged as a pivotal approach in the management of breast cancer, ensuring both oncological safety and aesthetic outcomes. However, challenges persist, particularly in upper inner quadrant (UIQ) tumors, where achieving satisfactory cosmetic results while preserving oncological integrity remains intricate.

Methods: 15 patients with UIQ breast cancer received OBCS using a pedicled pectoralis major myofascial flap (PMMF).

Article Synopsis
  • The study focuses on the use of deep circumflex iliac artery (DCIA) flaps for reconstructing maxillary defects, aiming to improve surgical efficiency and outcomes through computer-assisted techniques.
  • Researchers reviewed 10 cases of maxillary reconstruction, noting various types of defects and documenting donor site choices, types of flaps used, and the success of surgical procedures.
  • Results indicated 9 successful recoveries with no complications, while one case required additional surgery due to necrosis, demonstrating the potential reliability of the DCIA flap method when combined with advanced technology.

Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Oncology & Surgery, School/Hospital of Stomatology, the First Affiliated Hospital of Xinjiang Medical University, Urumqi, China.

Background: Chondromyxoid fibroma (CMF) is a rare cartilaginous tumor, accounting for < 1% of benign bone tumors. We report a case of temporomandibular joint (TMJ)-CMF, involving the pterygopalatine space and skull base and discuss its epidemiology, clinical characteristics, and management.

Case Presentation: A 56-year-old woman presented with facial asymmetry and progressive mouth opening restriction due to a mass expanding upwardly to the auriculotemporal region.
