Tropical pulmonary eosinophilia (TPE) is an exaggerated immunological response to filarial antigens mainly seen in adults in endemic areas and is uncommonly reported in children. The diagnosis is frequently delayed as it mimics asthma clinically, while the chest radiograph might show miliary mottling which is often confused with that in pulmonary tuberculosis. A 5-year-old girl presented with episodes of nocturnal cough, wheeze, low grade fever and breathlessness for the previous 4 months and was being treated for asthma. The absolute eosinophil count was markedly raised (53 × 10/L) with prominent bilateral infiltrates on the chest radiograph. Serology for microfilaria and a test for microfilaria antigens were positive and the patient showed a dramatic response to diethylcarbamazine, which confirmed the diagnosis of TPE. TPE is an important differential diagnosis of asthma especially in endemic areas.

Background: The independent and interrelated long-term effects of the exposome such as air pollution, greenness, and ambient temperature on lung function are not well understood, yet relevant in the light of climate change.
Methods: Pre-bronchodilation FEV1 from five mature birth cohorts (N = 4724) and three adult cohorts (N = 6052) from five European countries were used to assess cross-sectional associations with air pollution, greenness, and ambient temperature, assigned to their residential address. All two-way interactions and square terms were a priori included in building the final elastic net regression model.

Cystic echinococcosis (CE) is a neglected tropical parasitic disease linked with significant social and economic burdens worldwide. The scientific community has minimal information on echinococcosis in Romanian people, and hospital medical records are the only sources that may be used to investigate its status. A 7-year retrospective clinical study on pediatric patients with CE from Southeast Romania was performed, and 39 children and adolescents were included, aged 2-15 years old.

Post-acute COVID-19 syndrome (PACS) is characterized by the persistence of one or more symptoms after the acute phase, leading to physical disabilities. This study aims to investigate whether the functional capacity and respiratory function 120 days post-COVID-19 differed according to the level of respiratory support needed during hospitalization in acute COVID-19 in the pre-vaccine rollout period. We followed up with 118 COVID-19 hospitalized patients in the acute phase until 120 days post-acute disease, with patients split into a Non-Invasive Oxygen Therapy Group (OTG, n = 72), Invasive Mechanical Ventilation Group (IMV, n = 12), and Room Air Group (RAG, n = 34), assessing the body composition, respiratory muscle strength, pulmonary function, functional capacity, and muscle strength at the follow-up visit.
