Hydrogen production from water based on photoelectrochemical (PEC) reactions is feasible to solve the urgent energy crisis. Herein, hierarchical 3D self-supporting WO micro-nano architectures in situ grown on W plates are successfully fabricated via ultrafast laser processing hybrid with thermal oxidation. Owing to the large surface area and efficient interface charge transfer, the W plate with hierarchical porous WO nanoparticle aggregates has been directly employed as the photoanode for excellent PEC performance, which exhibits a high photocurrent density of 1.2 mA cm at 1.0 V vs Ag/AgCl (1.23 V vs RHE) under AM 1.5 G illumination and reveals excellent structural stability during long-term PEC water splitting reactions. The nanoscale and microscale features can be facilely tuned by controlling the laser processing parameters and the thermal oxidation conditions to achieve improved PEC activity. The presented hybrid method is simple, cost-effective, and controllable for large-scale fabrication, which should provide a new and general route that how the properties of conventional metal oxides can be improved via hierarchical 3D micro-nano configurations.

In the realm of photodetector (PD) technology, photoelectrochemical (PEC) PDs have garnered attention owing to their inherent advantages. Advances in this field depend on functional nanostructured materials, which are pivotal in improving the separation and transport of photogenerated electron-hole pairs to improve device efficiency. Herein, a highly photosensitive PEC UV PD is built using integrated self-supporting SiC/ZnS heterojunction nanowire array photoelectrodes through anodization and chemical deposition.

Aqueous zinc-ion batteries (AZIBs) with MnO cathodes have promising application prospects; however, their performance is hindered by their low efficiency and insufficient life. By leveraging the nanomicellar properties of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), a hierarchical δ-MnO with 2D/3D structure was directionally grown on a modified carbon cloth (CC) collector for realizing high-mass-loading AZIBs. Experimental results reveal the synergistic effects of micro/nano hierarchically structured MnO-CC heterointerfaces in accelerating the electron migration and transfer rate of Zn/H.

Electrochemical water splitting holds promise for sustainable hydrogen production but restricted by the sluggish reaction kinetics at the anodic oxygen evolution. Herein, we present a room-temperature spontaneous corrosion strategy to convert inexpensive iron (Fe) on iron foam substrates into highly active and stable self-supporting nickel iron layered hydroxide (NiFe LDH) catalysts. The corrosion evolution mechanisms are elucidated combining ex-situ scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and X-ray photo electron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques, demonstrating precise control over the concentration of Ni2+ and reaction time to achieve controllable micro-structures of NiFe LDH.

Ultrathin perfect absorber (UPA) enables efficient photothermal conversion (PC) in renewable chemical and energy systems. However, it is challenging so far to obtain efficient absorption with thickness significantly less than the wavelength, especially considering the common view that an ultrathin film can absorb at most 50% of incident light. Here, a highly light-absorbing and mechanically stable UPA is reported by learning from the honeycomb mirror design of the crab compound eyes.

Emerging photoelectrochemical (PEC) photodetectors (PDs) have notable advantages over conventional PDs and have attracted extensive attention. However, harsh liquid environments, such as those with high corrosivity and attenuation, substantially restrict their widespread application. Moreover, most PEC PDs are constructed by assembling numerous nanostructures on current collector substrates, which inevitably contain abundant interfaces and defects, thus greatly weakening the properties of PDs.
