Study Design: Psychometrics study.

Objectives: To assess the reliability of the Modified Ashworth Scale (MAS) and Modified Tardieu Scale (MTS) in patients with spinal cord injuries (SCIs).

Setting: Inpatient rehabilitation clinics at two state hospitals.

Methods: The study included 65 participants aged between 18 and 88 years with SCI with spasticity. All participants were at least 6 months after injury and had an American Spinal Injury Association Impairment Scale grade of A-D. The MAS and MTS scores were collected from the right hip adductor and hip extensor muscles, right knee extensor and knee flexor muscles and right plantar flexor muscles. Each participant was assessed twice by two experienced physiatrists 1 week apart. The raters were blinded to each other's scores.

Results: Inter-rater and test-retest agreement for the MAS scores (κ=0.531-0.774) was moderate to substantial. Inter-rater and test-retest agreement for the MTS X scores (κ=0.692-0.917) was substantial to almost perfect. Inter-rater reliability and test-retest reliability of the MTS R2-R1 was excellent (intra-class correlation coefficient (ICC) 0.874-0.973, confidence interval (CI): 0.79-0.98) for all muscles tested. Inter-rater reliability of the MTS R2 for the hip adductor and knee extensor muscles was poor (ICC 0.248, CI: -0.00 to 0.47 and ICC 0.094, CI: -0.16 to 0.34, respectively). The test-retest reliability of the MTS R2 was also poor for the knee extensor muscles (ICC 0.318, CI: -0.06 to 0.53).

Conclusion: MAS has adequate reliability for determining lower-extremity spasticity in patients with SCI. The demonstration of excellent inter-rater reliability and test-retest reliability of the MTS R2-R1 suggests its utility as a complementary tool for informing treatment decisions in patients with SCI.

Department of Infectious Diseases, Shanghai Key Laboratory of Infectious Diseases and Biosafety Emergency Response, National Medical Center for Infectious Diseases, Huashan Hospital, Shanghai Medical College, Fudan University, Shanghai 200040, China.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study evaluated the effectiveness of various methods in determining how resistant carbapenem-resistant Acinetobacter baumannii (CRAB) is to the antibiotic eravacycline, using 587 CRAB strains collected from a hospital over four years.
  • - Using the broth microdilution (BMD) method as a standard, the study found high susceptibility rates for different testing methods: BMD (98.13%), MIC test strip (MTS) (97.96%), and disc diffusion (DD) (97.61%).
  • - Results showed strong agreement between the MTS and DD methods with BMD, suggesting that both MTS and DD are reliable alternatives for testing eravacycline efficacy in clinical labs.*

Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering, National Cheng Kung University, Taiwan. Electronic address:

In this chapter we survey prediction tools and computational methods for the prediction of amino acid sequence elements which target proteins to the mitochondria. We will primarily focus on the prediction of N-terminal mitochondrial targeting signals (MTSs) and their N-terminal cleavage sites by mitochondrial peptidases. We first give practical details useful for using and installing some prediction tools.

The antioxidant properties of the leaves of the Mediterranean strawberry tree ( L.) are mainly attributed to the main bioactive compound, the phenolic glycoside arbutin. In this study, the safety profile of strawberry tree aqueous leaf extract (STE) and arbutin at the DNA level was assessed in vitro using porcine PK-15 kidney cells and HepG2 cells derived from human hepatomas.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined the fatigue lifetime of reduced-diameter dental implants placed in either bovine rib or polymer-based bone models.
  • Results indicated that implants in bovine ribs had better data dispersion and longer fatigue lifetimes compared to those in polymer models, though no statistically significant difference was found between the two groups.
  • Bovine ribs are suggested to be a more effective material for accelerated life testing due to their superior performance in data reliability.

Int Emerg Nurs

December 2024

Department of Nursing, Zhongshan Hospital, Fudan University, Shanghai, China. Electronic address:

Background: The nurse's ability to accurately identify urgent conditions and triage this vulnerable population tends to be complex and challenging. Little is known about the reliability and validity of common triage tools in geriatric patients.

Aim: To determine the reliability and validity of triage tools in geriatric emergency care and summarize the specific content of current triage tools for geriatric patients.
