Numerous surgical procedures have been described to treat trapeziometacarpal osteoarthritis, but no approach is currently considered superior. Good long-term outcomes have been reported with multiple procedures. No studies have been published comparing outcomes of the Arpe joint replacement (Biomet, Valence, France) with those of ligament reconstruction and tendon interposition (LRTI) using the Burton-Pellegrini technique. The study objective was to compare clinical outcomes between these techniques. Sixty-five patients with Eaton stage III osteoarthritis of the thumb were included in this retrospective follow-up study. Patients were assigned to LRTI (LRTI group) or total joint replacement (Arpe group) and were followed for a mean of 4.8 years. The LRTI group included 34 patients and the Arpe group included 31. Clinical outcome variables were determined preoperatively and every 6 months postoperatively. Pain relief and functional improvement were similar between groups. Pinch strength and range of motion were superior in the Arpe group. Metacarpophalangeal hyperextension appeared to be prevented in the Arpe group but increased over the follow-up period in the LRTI group. However, the complication rate was higher in the Arpe group. Arthroplasty with the Arpe prosthesis can be considered in selected patients who require greater strength and range of motion, although it has been associated with a higher complications rate. The current research discusses polymer conjugation, formulation development, and evaluation of sorafenib-loaded polymeric nanomicelles of conjugated soluplus (solu-tin) and polymeric mixed nanomicelles of conjugated soluplus (solu-tin) with conjugated poloxamer 188 (polo-tin) for site-specific posterior segment delivery to the retina in managing retinoblastoma. Firstly, the soluplus and poloxamer 188 were conjugated with biotin by Fischer esterification reaction and evaluated by FTIR and H NMR for confirmation of covalent bond formation involving the carboxyl group of biotin and hydroxyl group of polymers. Secondly, the sorafenib-loaded solu-tin nanomicelles and mixed nanomicelles of solu-tin with polo-tin were formulated by the thin film hydration method.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess how the SUMOylation inhibitor TAK981 affects oxidative damage caused by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) in human retinal pigment epithelial cells (ARPE-19) and its underlying mechanisms.
  • An oxidative damage model was created, and various concentrations of TAK981 were tested to see their impact on cell viability, levels of oxidative stress markers, and inflammatory cytokines, while comparing them to control and model groups.
  • Results showed that H2O2 reduced cell viability significantly, while TAK981 treatment improved cell survival and reduced oxidative damage and inflammation markers, indicating its potential protective effects against oxidative stress in ARPE-19 cells.

Modeling monocular form deprivation in rabbits using a simulated-cataract intraocular lens.

Int J Ophthalmol

December 2024

Eye Hospital and School of Ophthalmology and Optometry, Wenzhou Medical University, Wenzhou 325003, Zhejiang Province, China.

Aim: To establish an animal model of form deprivation amblyopia based on a simulated cataract intraocular lens (IOLs).

Methods: Poly(dimethyl siloxane)-SiO thin films (PSF) with different degrees of opacity as IOL materials were prepared. The light transmission of the PSF-IOL was measured, and its biosafety was determined by cell counting kit (CCK)-8 assay using the HLEC-B3 cell line and ARPE-19 cell line.

Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is a representative age-related ophthalmic disease, and the pathogenesis of AMD remains unclear. This research intended to determine whether epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) could alleviate the progression of AMD and the possible mechanism. We constructed three groups of mice (young, aged, and EGCG), and HE and TUNEL staining of retinal tissues was performed to observe the structural changes in the retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) layer and the level of apoptosis, respectively.

Acute retinal pigment epitheliitis using adaptive optics imaging: a case report.

BMC Ophthalmol

November 2024

Department of Ophthalmology, Erasmus MC, University Medical Center, Rotterdam, The Netherlands.

Article Synopsis
  • Acute Retinal Pigment Epitheliitis (ARPE) is a rare eye disorder mostly affecting young adults, leading to temporary vision loss, often resolving within 6 to 12 weeks.
  • The condition was studied in two patients using advanced imaging techniques like Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) and Adaptive Optics Flood Illumination Ophthalmoscopy (AO-FIO), revealing insights into retinal changes and recovery.
  • Both patients showed initial vision loss but eventually regained eyesight, although some retinal structural changes persisted even after improvement, highlighting the disease's complex nature.
