Numerous reports describe the successful use of nitrous oxide for analgesia in children undergoing painful procedures. Although shown to be safe, effective, and economical, nitrous oxide use is not yet common in pediatric oncology clinics and few reports detail its effectiveness for children undergoing repeated lumbar punctures. We developed a nitrous oxide clinic, and undertook a review of pediatric oncology lumbar puncture records for those patients receiving nitrous oxide in 2011. No major complications were noted. Minor complications were noted in 2% of the procedures. We offer guidelines for establishing such a clinic.

Four different materials-pure NiO, pure LSCF (LaSrCoFeO ), 10% Ni/LSCF, and 20% Ni/LSCF-were studied. The Ni/LSCF catalysts demonstrated superior catalytic performance for both NO decomposition and the partial oxidation of methane (POM) compared to pure NiO and pure LSCF. This enhancement is attributed to an increase in oxygen vacancies and improved oxygen mobility within the catalyst, as evidenced by O-TPD analysis.

Versatile nitrate-respiring heterotrophs are previously concealed contributors to sulfur cycle.

Nat Commun

State Key Laboratory of Urban Water Resource and Environment, School of Environment, Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin, 150090, PR China.

Heterotrophic denitrifiers play crucial roles in global carbon and nitrogen cycling. However, their inability to oxidize sulfide renders them vulnerable to this toxic molecule, which inhibits the key enzymatic reaction responsible for reducing nitrous oxide (NO), thereby raising greenhouse gas emissions. Here, we applied microcosm incubations, community-isotope-corrected DNA stable-isotope probing, and metagenomics to characterize a cohort of heterotrophic denitrifiers in estuarine sediments that thrive by coupling sulfur oxidation with denitrification through chemolithoheterotrophic metabolism.

Risk of increasing soil nitrous oxide emissions by chemical oxidation modification on biochar.

Biochar is widely recognized as a soil amendment capable of mitigating soil nitrous oxide (NO) emissions. However, the effects of biochar modification, particularly through chemical oxidation, remain relatively unexplored. This study modified wood and corn straw biochars using HO and acid (HSO/HNO).

Sotos syndrome is a genetic disorder characterized by distinct facial features, intellectual disability, and overgrowth. In this case, a patient with Sotos syndrome presented with severe intellectual disability, for which general anesthesia was initially considered. However, at the request of the patient's guardian, the treatment was performed under intravenous sedation.
