Published: April 2017

This study aimed to identify and characterize microRNAs (miRNAs) that are related to radiosensitivity in low-grade gliomas (LGGs). The miRNA expression levels in radiosensitive and radioresistant LGGs were compared using The Cancer Genome Atlas database, and differentially expressed miRNAs were identified using the EBSeq package. The miRNA target genes were predicted using Web databases. Fifteen miRNAs were differentially expressed between the groups, with miR-10a and miR-204 being related to overall survival (OS) of patients with LGG. Patients with upregulated miR-10a expression had a higher mortality rate and shorter OS time, whereas patients with downregulated miR-204 expression had a lower mortality rate and longer OS time. Two genes, and , were targets for both miRNAs. Thus, this study suggests that expression of miR-10a and miR-204 is significantly related to both radiosensitivity and the survival of patients with LGG. These miRNAs could therefore act as clinical biomarkers for LGG prognosis and diagnosis.

Cancer cachexia is a complex metabolic syndrome characterized by unintentional loss of skeletal muscle and body fat. This syndrome is frequently associated with different types of cancer and negatively affects the prognosis and outcome of these patients. It involves a dynamic interplay between tumor cells and adipose tissue, where tumor-derived extracellular vesicles (EVs) play a crucial role in mediating intercellular communication.

Article Synopsis
  • - Exosomes, which are tiny vesicles found in all body fluids, play important roles in cell communication, particularly through their cargo of proteins and miRNAs, which can influence disease development by deregulating protein production.
  • - The study focuses on specific exosomal miRNAs associated with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and examines their roles in disease pathogenesis, using a sample of 306 RA patients and matched controls to assess expression levels and oxidative stress.
  • - Results showed that several miRNAs were significantly downregulated in RA patients, while markers of oxidative stress and histone deacetylation were elevated, indicating a negative relationship between these miRNAs and disease severity.

BDNF and its signaling in cancer.

J Cancer Res Clin Oncol

June 2023

Research Center for Immunodeficiencies, Children's Medical Center, Tehran University of Medical Sciences, Dr. Qarib St, Keshavarz Blvd, Tehran, 14194, Iran.

Article Synopsis
  • - The review discusses the role of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) in cancer, highlighting its potential to promote cancer cell growth and migration through specific receptor pathways like TrkB and p75NTR.
  • - Studies show that BDNF is overexpressed in several cancers ( prostate, lung, and breast), which is associated with poorer patient outcomes, suggesting that measuring BDNF levels could help in disease diagnosis and treatment response prediction.
  • - Current clinical research is focused on targeting BDNF receptors and their signaling pathways with various agents to potentially mitigate their oncogenic effects, but further trials are needed to thoroughly understand BDNF's role in cancer and explore it as a therapeutic target.

Follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) has been widely reported to influence ovarian follicular development, and miRNAs play a significant role in mammalian follicular development by regulating their target genes. Therefore, it is of interest to explore the roles of miRNAs in sheep follicular development during FSH stimulation. In the current study, we constructed miRNA expression profiles of small follicles (SFs, prerecruitment stage), medium follicles (MFs, dominance stage), and large follicles (LFs, maturation stage).

The impact of non-coding RNAs on normal stem cells.

Self-renewal and differentiation into diverse cells are two main characteristics of stem cells. These cells have important roles in development and homeostasis of different tissues and are supposed to facilitate tissue regeneration. Function of stem cells is regulated by dynamic interactions between external signaling, epigenetic factors, and molecules that regulate expression of genes.
