Fluorine is the most electronegative element and can be used as an excellent hydrogen-bond acceptor. Fluorous coordination compounds exhibit several advantageous properties, such as enhanced high thermal and oxidative stability, low polarity, weak intermolecular interactions and a small surface tension compared to hydrocarbons. C-H...F-C interactions, although weak, play a significant role in regulating the arrangement of the organic molecules in the crystalline state and stabilizing the secondary structure. Two cadmium(II) fluorous coordination compounds formed from 2,2'-bipyridine, 4,4'-bipyridine and pentafluorobenzoate ligands, namely catena-poly[[aqua(2,2'-bipyridine-κN,N')(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorobenzoato-κO)cadmium(II)]-μ-2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorobenzoato-κO:O'], [Cd(CFO)(CHN)(HO)], (1), and catena-poly[[diaquabis(2,3,4,5,6-pentafluorobenzoato-κO)cadmium(II)]-μ-4,4'-bipyridine-κN:N'], [Cd(CFO)(CHN)(HO)], (2), have been synthesized solvothermally and structurally characterized. Compound (1) shows a one-dimensional chain structure composed of Cd-O coordination bonds and is stabilized by π-π stacking and O-H...O hydrogen-bond interactions. Compound (2) displays a one-dimensional linear chain structure formed by Cd-N coordination interactions involving the 4,4'-bipyridine ligand. Adjacent one-dimensional chains are extended into two-dimensional sheets by O-H...O hydrogen bonds between the coordinated water molecules and adjacent carboxylate groups. Moreover, the chains are further linked by C-H...F-C interactions to afford a three-dimensional network. In both structures, hydrogen bonding involving the coordinated water molecules is a primary driving force in the formation of the supramolecular structures.

Microscopic structures in liquid-liquid extraction, such as structuration between extractants or extracted complexes in bulk organic phases and at interfaces, can influence macroscopic phenomena, such as the distribution behavior of solutes, including extraction efficiency and selectivity. In this study, we correlated the macroscopic behavior of the Zr(IV) extraction from nitric acid solutions with microscopic structural information to understand at the molecular level the key factors contributing to the higher metal ion extraction performance in the fluorous extraction system as compared to the analogous organic extraction system. The fluorous and organic extraction systems consist of tris(4,4,5,5,6,6,7,7,7-nonafluoroheptyl) phosphate (TFP) in perfluorohexane and tri--heptyl phosphate (THP) in -hexane, respectively.

Water-in-salt systems, i.e., super-concentrated aqueous electrolytes, such as lithium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)imide (21 mol/kg), have been recently discovered to exhibit unexpectedly large electrochemical windows and high lithium transference numbers, thus paving the way to safe and sustainable charge storage devices.

The thiol-Michael addition is a popular, selective, high-yield "click" reaction utilized for applications ranging from small-molecule synthesis to polymer or surface modification. Here, we combined experimental and quantum mechanical modeling approaches using density functional theory (DFT) to examine the thiol-Michael reaction of N-allyl-N-acrylamide monomers used to prepare sequence-defined oligothioetheramides (oligoTEAs). Experimentally, the reaction was evaluated with two fluorous tagged thiols and several monomers at room temperature (22 °C and 40 °C).

Fluorous interaction induced self-assembly of tobacco mosaic virus coat protein for cisplatin delivery.

Nanoscale

July 2018

Key Laboratory of Photochemical Conversion and Optoelectronic Materials, Technical Institute of Physics and Chemistry, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Beijing 100190, China.

Tobacco mosaic virus coat protein was modified with a small molecular fluorous ponytail at specific sites, and self-assembled into spherical nanoparticles through fluorous interaction induced self-assembly. By loading the anti-cancer drug cisplatin through metal-ligand coordination, this spherical assembly with high stability has potential as a drug carrier.

The polyfluorinated title compounds, [MCl(CHFNO)] or [4,4'-(HCFCHOCH)-2,2'-bpy]MCl [M = Pd, (1), and M = Pt, (2)], have -C(H)OC(H)CFH side chains with H-atom donors at the α and β sites. The structures of (1) and (2) are isomorphous, with the nearly planar (bpy)MCl molecules stacked in columns. Within one column, π-dimer pairs alternate between a π-dimer pair reinforced with C-H.
