Background: Superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIO) are emerging as a viable alternative to technetium and blue dye. Our study was designed to evaluate the correlation between SPIO dose, injection site, and timing with sentinel lymph node (SLN) detection and iron content in retrieved SLNs.

Methods: This study combined individual patient data from three Dutch and five Swedish studies.

Magnetic field hyperthermia relies on the intra-tumoural delivery of magnetic nanoparticles by interstitial injection, followed by their heating on exposure to a remotely-applied alternating magnetic field (AMF). This offers a potential sole or adjuvant route to treating drug-resistant tumours for which no alternatives are currently available. However, two challenges in nanoparticle delivery currently hinder the effective clinical translation of this technology: obtaining enough magnetic material within the tumour to enable sufficient heating; and doing this accurately to limit or avoid damage to surrounding healthy tissue.

Aim: To investigate the efficacy of synthetic magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in distinguishing high-grade gliomas (HGGs) from solitary brain metastases (SBMs) in peritumoural oedema.

Materials And Methods: Thirty-five patients with HGGs and 25 patients with SBMs were recruited and scanned using synthetic MRI using a 3 T scanner. Two radiologists measured synthetic MRI-derived relaxation values independently (T1, T2, proton density [PD]) in the peritumoural oedema, which was used to generate quantitative metrics before (T1, T2, and PD) and after (T1, T2, and PD) contrast agent injection.

Numerous studies have shown the positive correlation between high levels of Pi and tumour progression. A critical goal of macrophage-based cancer therapeutics is to reduce anti-inflammatory macrophages (M2) and increase proinflammatory antitumour macrophages (M1). This study aimed to investigate the relationship between macrophage polarization and low-Pi stress.

Lymph node mapping in gastric cancer: a pilot study in Western patients.

Can J Surg

September 2022

From the Department of Surgery, University of British Columbia, Vancouver, B.C. (Watanabe, Hamilton).

In East Asia, the role of lymph node (LN) mapping in assisting surgical lymphadenectomy, which is integral to the management of gastric cancer, has been explored. We sought to evaluate its safety and utility in Western patients. Thirteen patients with nonmetastatic gastric adenocarcinoma received endoscopic, peritumoural, submucosal indocyanine green fluorescence (ICG) injections before surgery, and ICG was assessed intraoperatively using a laparoscopic detection system.
