Excess Radiation to Newborns Hospitalized in the Intensive Care Unit.

Newborns in intensive care units are generally subjected to a great number of X-rays procedures and to the risk of radiation-induced damage. This study evaluated a possible excess radiation by excess of radiographs, excess of dose per radiograph or under-collimation of the X-ray beam. The mean of X-rays per newborn was 12 (1-65) during a mean hospitalization of 29 d (1-226 d). The mean frequency was 0.8 X-ray exposures per newborn. About 13% of X-rays were performed without a well-defined clinical motivation. The mean entrance surface dose of 72 μGy was higher than in most of comparative studies. Under-collimation caused non-thoracic structures to appear frequently on chest radiographs. This study indicates a possible reduction in X-rays exposures by applying the justification principle for each X-ray procedure, recommends a multiprofessional work in the attempt to dose optimization, and shows need of correctly use of collimation system to avoid irradiation of non-thoracic structures.

Background: Because the occurrence of metabolic syndrome (MetS) might contribute to childhood cancer survivor's excess risk of cardiovascular disease, the authors assessed the prevalence and determinants of MetS in the Dutch Childhood Cancer Survivor Study (DCCSS-LATER2) cohort.

Methods: In total, 2338 adult childhood cancer survivors (CCS) were cross-sectionally assessed for the prevalence of MetS, using the Lifelines cohort (N = 132,226 adults without a history of cancer) as references. The prevalence of MetS was clinically assessed using existing classifications, as well as an alternative method using dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry fat% instead of waist circumference to define abdominal adiposity.

Elucidation of the Off-Center Displaced Mo in Octahedral Coordination in BaMoO.

The detailed crystal structure as well as the heat capacity at low temperature and standard entropy of BaMoO are reported for the first time. High-resolution X-ray and neutron diffraction were employed to reveal the structural features of this compound. BaMoO has a six-coordinated Mo and a strongly negative excess volume with respect to the binary oxides.

RAFT Dispersion Polymerization of 2-Hydroxyethyl Methacrylate in Non-polar Media.

We report the reversible addition-fragmentation chain transfer (RAFT) dispersion polymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) in -dodecane using a poly(lauryl methacrylate) (PLMA) precursor at 90 °C. This formulation is an example of polymerization-induced self-assembly (PISA), which leads to the formation of a colloidal dispersion of spherical PLMA-PHEMA nanoparticles at 10-20% w/w solids. PISA syntheses involving polar monomers in non-polar media have been previously reported but this particular system offers some unexpected and interesting challenges in terms of both synthesis and characterization.
