Shellfish aquaculture in the Salish Sea (encompassing the Strait of Juan de Fuca, Puget Sound, and the Georgia Strait) is a major source of clams, oysters, and mussels in the United States and Canada. Plastic gear is necessary for the viability of many of these operations. During the past few years, shellfish farm permits issued in Washington State have been challenged on various bases that have included allegations that the plastic gear is releasing microplastics, commonly defined as particles less than 5 mm in diameter. Published survey data on sources of marine plastic debris demonstrate the very limited contribution of aquaculture gear. Both permits and industry codes of practice provide procedures to minimize loss of gear to the marine environment. Plastic gear is also designed specifically to maintain its integrity and not degrade in the marine environment. Plastic degradation is greatest on beaches with high UV exposure, whereas aquaculture gear is mostly underwater and/or covered by biofoulants. Available data for microplastics in water, sediment, and biota of the Salish Sea do not suggest significant release of microplastics from shellfish aquaculture operations. This study seeks to explore the molecular regulatory mechanism within Dosinia corrugata in response to extreme high-temperature conditions, aiming to enhance the sustainable development of the D. corrugata aquaculture industry. To identify heat-responsive genes and elucidate adaptive mechanisms, we conducted transcriptional profiling of D.

Diarrhetic shellfish toxins (DSTs) are widespread in marine environments, posing potential threats to marine ecosystems, shellfish aquaculture, and human health. Despite their prevalence, knowledge of the stability of dissolved DSTs in seawater is still limited. This study aimed to investigate the effects of bacteria, temperature, and irradiation on the stability of dissolved okadaic acid (OA) and dinophysistoxin-1 (DTX1) in seawater.

The Chinese mitten crab (Eriocheir sinensis) is an important component in Chinese aquaculture. Due to its lacking adaptive immune system as a crustacean, it exhibits poor tolerance to environmental stresses, particularly the deleterious impact of lipopolysaccharide (LPS) from pathogenic bacteria during E. sinensis culture.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are highly conserved endogenous non-coding RNAs that play a crucial role in fish immune response by regulating gene expression at the post-transcriptional level. In recent years, the viral diseases caused by infectious hematopoietic necrosis virus (IHNV) have caused significant economic losses in rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) aquaculture, whereas the immune regulatory mechanisms of miRNAs involved in rainbow trout resistance to IHNV infection remains largely undefined. In this study, we analyzed the structural characteristics of Oncorhynchus mykiss tumor necrosis factor receptor-associated factor 3 (OmTRAF3) by bioinformatics software and explored the molecular mechanism of miR-203-3p in rainbow trout resistance to IHNV by regulating OmTRAF3 in vivo and in vitro.

Rahnella aquatilis is an emerging opportunistic pathogen that usually causes septicaemia in fish and poses a potential threat to human health. VgrG gene is an important virulence factor of type VI secretion system in R. aquatilis, but its regulatory mechanism underlying PANoptosis is still unknown.
