Background: Effective vector control interventions, notably insecticide-treated nets (ITNs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS) are indispensable for malaria control in Tanzania and elsewhere. However, the emergence of widespread insecticide resistance threatens the efficacy of these interventions. Monitoring of insecticide resistance is, therefore, critical for the selection and assessment of the programmatic impact of insecticide-based interventions.

Achieving a target of zero-zero disease, zero disability, and zero discrimination-has become the dominant focus of campaigns to control or eliminate diseases, from HIV/AIDS to malaria to leprosy. Given the historical failure of most eradication programs over the last century, such teleological imaginings of disease-free futures might seem overly utopian. But even if it were possible to eradicate such diseases in their entirety, would this be universally welcomed, even by those most affected by them? In this article, I compare the narratives of national and international bodies concerned with eliminating leprosy, in particular, with the more ambivalent narratives of those affected by the disease in India, the country where the disease is most prevalent.

Background: The WHO tube bioassay is a method for exposing mosquitos to determine susceptibility to insecticides, with mortality to discriminating doses <98% indicating possible resistance and <90% confirming resistance. This bioassay is also used for synergism testing to assess if susceptibility is restored by pre-exposure to the synergist piperonyl butoxide.
Methods: Here we perform testing with pyrethroid-susceptible and pyrethroid-resistant to quantify the variability of the WHO tube bioassay and identify its sources.

The world is not on track to reach the majority of the UNAIDS 2025 targets, and people who inject drugs (PWID) continue to be left behind, hindered by counterproductive law enforcement practices, punitive laws, economic distress, and social stigma and discrimination. Poor access to HIV pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) among PWID is nested within the limited access to broader harm reduction services, including needle and syringe programs, opioid overdose management, opioid agonist therapy (also known as medication-assisted treatment), and condoms. Among PWID, women who inject drugs are disproportionately affected and face additional gender-based barriers.
