The confinement of liquids in nanometer-scale gaps can lead to changes in their viscous shear properties. For liquids of polar molecules, the charge state of the confining surfaces has a significant influence on the structure in the confined liquid. Here we report on the implementation of dynamic shear force microscopy in an electrochemical cell. Lateral oscillations of the tip of an atomic force microscope were magnetically activated at a frequency of about 50 kHz. The damping of the lateral tip oscillation was recorded as a function of the tip-sample distance and of the electrode potential at the surface of a Au(100) single crystal electrode. The influence of surface charges on the shear response of the nano-confined liquids was demonstrated for the ionic liquid [EMIM][NTf] and for aqueous NaSO solution.

The multicentered bonds present in planar borophene lead to a more complex structure and richer chemical properties. Herein, we use first-principles calculations to investigate the electronic, mechanical, and superconducting properties of various borophene polymorphs, focusing on the newly synthesized β and β phases. Notably, in order to balance and optimize the electron filling of the valence bond orbitals, the planar borophene structure is composed of a mixture of triangular lattices and hexagonal holes with multicentered bonding, which further enhances the stability of the structure and possesses a rare polymorphic property.

To investigate the dynamic compression properties and crushing features of gas-containing coal under complex geological environments, a dynamic and static combined loading test system was independently developed for conducting triaxial dynamic compression tests. The dynamic stress-strain curves under different strain rates were analyzed to study the effects of strain rate and gas pressure on the dynamic mechanical characteristics. Crushed coal samples were sieved and analyzed using a standard sieve and fractal theory.

The relationship between the micro technical indexes and the macro road performance of high modulus asphalt (HMA) is helpful for understanding its mechanism and performance, and promoting its application. To explore the relationship, two kinds of high modulus asphalt (HMA), LLDPE/SBS composite modified asphalt and rubber/PPA composite modified asphalt were prepared according to the HMA requirements. Secondly, Molecular models of two kinds of HMA were established through molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, and the high temperature parameters of LLDPE/SBS composite modified asphalt were obtained with the two methods, namely the micro molecular dynamics simulation and high temperature rheological test, respectively.

The most advanced monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) and vaccines against malaria target the central repeat region or closely related sequences within the circumsporozoite protein (PfCSP). Here, using an antigen-agnostic strategy to investigate human antibody responses to whole sporozoites, we identified a class of mAbs that target a cryptic PfCSP epitope that is only exposed after cleavage and subsequent pyroglutamylation (pGlu) of the newly formed N terminus. This pGlu-CSP epitope is not targeted by current anti-PfCSP mAbs and is not included in the licensed malaria vaccines.

Graphene and its derivatives have been widely used as reinforcing nanofillers for high-performance polymer nanocomposites. The effectiveness of the reinforcement largely depends on the properties of the nanofiller-matrix interface, which can be represented by the interfacial shear strength (IFSS). This work systematically investigates IFSS enhancements for polyethylene (PE) nanocomposites reinforced by graphene origami (GOri) through molecular dynamics pull-out simulations.
