We evaluated the prevalence of significant lung abnormalities on computed tomography (CT) in patients who died from a respiratory illness other than lung cancer in the National Lung Screening Trial (NLST).In this retrospective case-control study, NLST participants in the CT arm who died of respiratory illness other than lung cancer were matched for age, sex, pack-years and smoking status to a surviving control. A chest radiologist and a radiology resident blinded to the outcome independently scored baseline CT scans visually and qualitatively for the presence of emphysema, airway wall thickening and fibrotic lung disease. The prevalence of CT abnormalities was compared between cases and controls by using chi-squared tests. In total, 167 participants died from a respiratory cause other than lung cancer. The prevalence of severe emphysema, airway wall thickening and fibrotic lung disease were 28.7% 4.8%, 26.9% 13.2% and 18.6% 0.5% in cases and controls, respectively. Radiological findings were significantly more prevalent in deaths compared with controls (all p<0.001).CT-diagnosed severe emphysema, airway wall thickening and fibrosis were much more common in NLST participants who died from respiratory disease, and CT may provide an additional means of identifying these diseases.

Morphological and genetic demonstration of in dromedary camels.

Open Vet J

November 2024

Department of Parasitology, College of Veterinary Medicine, University of Al-Qadisiyah, Al Diwaniyahs, Iraq.

Background: is one of the most important parasites, which infests the upper respiratory tract of camels leading to deteriorating health effects, substantial economic losses, and even death.

Aim: This study aimed to detect the prevalence rate of in slaughtered camels, determining its morphology using the electron microscope, and confirming its species by molecular phylogeny.

Methods: A total of 200 slaughtered camels at different areas in Al Muthanna province (Iraq) were inspected visually to collect the parasite samples that were identified initially based on their morphological characteristics.

A case series of VATS intrapericardial pneumonectomy: a bi-centric experience.

J Cardiothorac Surg

December 2024

Izmir Faculty of Medicine, Department of Thoracic Surgery, University of Health Sciences Turkey, Izmir, Turkey.

Background: Intrapericardial pneumonectomy is a complex procedure indicated for large lung tumors where safe dissection of major vascular structures outside the pericardium is unfeasible or when the pericardium itself is invaded. Traditionally managed via open thoracotomy, recent advancements in VATS techniques now allow for intrapericardial pneumonectomy even in cases with extensive tumors or locally advanced disease. In this article, we detail the clinical outcomes and surgical considerations of six patients with non-small cell lung cancer who underwent VATS intrapericardial pneumonectomy.

Comparative efficacy and safety of pulmonary surfactant delivery strategies in neonatal RDS: a network meta-analysis.

BMC Pulm Med

December 2024

Department of Neonatology, Children's Hospital of Chongqing Medical University, Chongqing, 400,014, China.

Purpose: To compare five pulmonary surfactant (PS) administration strategies for neonates with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS), including intubation-surfactant-extubation (InSurE), thin catheter administration, laryngeal mask airway (LMA), surfactant nebulization (SN), and usual care, with a particular emphasis on the comparison of the LMA and SN with other strategies.

Methods: We conducted a systematic search of MEDLINE, EMBASE, PUBMED, and Cochrane CENTRAL databases up to November 2023. Two authors independently conducted data extraction, and assessed bias using the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool.

Huashan Rare Disease Center and Department of Neurology, Huashan Hospital, Shanghai Medical College, National Center for Neurological Disorders, Fudan University, No.12 Urumqi Middle Road, Jing 'an District, Shanghai 200040, China.

Background: Thymoma-associated myasthenia gravis (TAMG) is a subtype of myasthenia gravis (MG) that is associated with more severe symptoms and a relatively poor prognosis. Eculizumab, an inhibitor to target human C5 component of the complement cascade, is considered a treatment option for refractory generalized MG (gMG).

Objectives: To explore the safety and efficacy of eculizumab in patients with TAMG.
