Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) is used to compare the apparent electron transfer rate constant () for a series of alkanethiol and of carbohydrate-terminated alkanethiol self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on both flat gold and on nanoporous gold (np-Au). Using the surface area for np-Au determined by oxide stripping, the values of for the alkanethiol modified np-Au are initially over two orders of magnitude smaller than the values found on flat Au. This result provides evidence that the diffusing redox probe Fe(CN) only accesses a fraction of the np-Au surface after alkanethiol modification suggesting very limited wetting of the internal pores due to the hydrophobic nature of these surfaces. In contrast, for np-Au modified by carbohydrate-terminated (mannose or galactose) alkanethiols the values of are about 10-40 fold smaller than on flat gold, suggesting more extensive access of the diffusing redox probe within the pores and better but still incomplete wetting, a result also found for modification of np-Au with mercaptododecanoic acid. A short chain PEG thiol derivative is found to result in a comparison of values that suggests nearly complete wetting of the internal pores for this highly hydrophilic derivative. These results are of significance for the potential applications of SAM modified np-Au in electrochemical sensors, especially for those based on carbohydrate-protein recognition, or those of np-Au modified by SAMs with polar terminal groups.

Azithromycin (AM) is one of the prescribed drugs in pandemic medication treatment which has paid great attention. We developed in this study a simply modified carbon paste electrode (CPE) to detect AM using poly-threonine (PT). PT or similar polymers are used as carriers to enhance the delivery and effectiveness of AM.

The successful development of a metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived Co/CoO/C core-shell composite integrated into laser-induced graphitic (LIG) carbon electrodes for electrochemical sensing is reported. The sensors are fabricated via a direct laser scribing technique using a UV laser (355 nm wavelength) to induce the photothermolysis of rationally selected ZIF-67 into the LIG matrix. Electrochemical characterization reveals that the incorporation of the laser-scribed ZIF-67-derived composite on the electrode surface reduces the impedance more than 100 times compared with bare LIG sensors.

Proton conducting electrochemical cells (PCECs) are efficient and clean intermediate-temperature energy conversion devices. The proton concentration across the PCECs is often nonuniform, and characterizing the distribution of proton concentration can help to locate the position of rate-limiting reactions. However, the determination of the local proton concentration under operating conditions remains challenging.

In this research work, four distinct WO electrodes were synthesized and coated with three different polymers, known as polypyrrole (PPy), poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) in poly(4-styrenesulfonate) (PEDOT:PSS) and polyaniline (PANi), using electropolymerization techniques. The morphological features of the samples were thoroughly characterized through Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (FE-SEM) and Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM) analyses. Additionally, contact angle measurements and electrochemical characterizations were used to verify the performance of each electrode, aiding in the prediction of their suitability for energy storage applications in lithium-ion batteries.

Corrosion resistance, hardness and other mechanical properties of high entropy alloys are enhanced due to the addition of the proper elements. In this study, an equimolar powder mixture of AlNiCoCrFe was prepared as a coating material on plain carbon steel. It was produced by gas tungsten arc welding with the electrical currents of 90, 110 and 130 A.
