There have been many case-control studies of melanoma and the use of indoor tanning equipment. A recent meta analysis of 8 credible studies in North America estimated an overall significant odds ratio of 1.23. Three of these 8 studies also reported separately on commercial use and home use of indoor tanning equipment. For home use the overall odds ratio was a significant 1.53 while for commercial use there was a non significant 1.05.

Skin malignancies associated with radiation exposure, notably malignant melanoma and keratinocyte carcinoma, are emerging as a significant global health challenge. While indoor tanning beds are associated with skin cancer risk, limited research exists on ultraviolet (UV)/light-emitting diode (LED) nail lamps used widely in manicures/pedicures. This scoping review aimed to synthesize evidence on the health effects of UV/LED nail lamp exposure during manicures/pedicures.

Background: Rates of ultraviolet radiation (UVR)-emitting tanning bed use have declined in the United States over the past decade. However, many young adults continue to indoor tan at rates that put them at risk for melanoma. There is evidence that UVR may impact addiction pathways and some people who use tanning beds experience urges to tan and diminished control over tanning which may be evidence of a behavioral addiction.
