Lycopene cyclases cyclize the open ends of acyclic lycopene (ψ,ψ-carotene) into β- or ε-ionone rings in the crucial bifurcation step of carotenoid biosynthesis. Among all carotenoid constituents, β-carotene (β,β-carotene) is found in all photosynthetic organisms, except for purple bacteria and heliobacteria, suggesting a ubiquitous distribution of lycopene β-cyclase activity in these organisms. In this work, we isolated a gene () encoding a lycopene β-cyclase from , a red alga that is considered to be one of the primitive multicellular eukaryotic photosynthetic organisms and accumulates carotenoid constituents with both β- and ε-rings, including β-carotene, zeaxanthin, α-carotene (β,ε-carotene) and lutein. Functional complementation in demonstrated that BfLCYB is able to catalyze cyclization of lycopene into monocyclic γ-carotene (β,ψ-carotene) and bicyclic β-carotene, and cyclization of the open end of monocyclic δ-carotene (ε,ψ-carotene) to produce α-carotene. No ε-cyclization activity was identified for BfLCYB. Sequence comparison showed that BfLCYB shares conserved domains with other functionally characterized lycopene cyclases from different organisms and belongs to a group of ancient lycopene cyclases. Although also synthesizes α-carotene and lutein, its enzyme-catalyzing ε-cyclization is still unknown.

Background: Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a systemic metabolic disease with a variable number and type of clinical symptoms mostly impacting the brain. Skin carotenoid content (SCC) is an objective measure of carotenoid-containing fruit and vegetable intake that has been validated in diverse populations. Our previous findings suggest SCC scores differ between older adults with and without AD regardless of dietary intake of carotenoids.

Age-related hearing loss is the third most common health condition affecting elderly individuals. The relationship between lycopene in blood and sensorineural hearing loss in elderly adults has rarely been reported. This study aimed to elucidate the connection between serum lycopene levels and sensorineural hearing loss among elderly individuals.

Precise and predictable genetic elements are required to address various issues, such as suboptimal metabolic flux or imbalanced protein assembly caused by the inadequate control of polycistronic gene expression in bacteria. Here, we devised a synthetic biopart based on the translational coupling to control polycistronic gene expression. This module links the translation of genes within a polycistronic mRNA, maintaining their expression ratios regardless of coding sequences, transcription rate, and upstream gene translation rate.

Wide variety of consumable leafy vegetables are present in the nature but most of them are neither utilised nor scientifically investigated. Nutraceutical potential of these plants should be studied to enrich our knowledge, thus making them part of balanced diets. In view of this objective, three leafy vegetables were selected viz.
