Affective empathy, cognitive empathy and social attention in children at high risk of criminal behaviour.

Published: August 2017

Background: Empathy deficits are hypothesized to underlie impairments in social interaction exhibited by those who engage in antisocial behaviour. Social attention is an essential precursor to empathy; however, no studies have yet examined social attention in relation to cognitive and affective empathy in those exhibiting antisocial behaviour.

Methods: Participants were 8- to 12-year-old children at high risk of developing criminal behaviour (N = 114, 80.7% boys) and typically developing controls (N = 43, 72.1% boys). The high-risk children were recruited through an ongoing early identification and intervention project of the city of Amsterdam, focusing on the underage siblings or children of delinquents and those failing primary school. Video clips with neutral and emotional content (fear, happiness and pain) were shown, while heart rate (HR), skin conductance level (SCL) and skin conductance responses (SCRs) were recorded to measure affective empathy. Answers to questions about emotions in the clips were coded to measure cognitive empathy. Eye-tracking was used to evaluate visual scanning patterns towards social relevant cues (eyes and face) in the clips.

Results: The high-risk group did not differ from the control group in social attention and cognitive empathy, but showed reduced HR to pain and fear, and reduced SCL and SCRs to pain.

Conclusions: Children at high risk of developing criminal behaviour show impaired affective empathy but unimpaired social attention and cognitive empathy. The implications for early identification and intervention studies with antisocial children are discussed.

Potyvirus-Based Vectors for Heterologous Gene Expression in Plants.

Viruses

December 2024

Department of Virus Ecology, Institute of Virology, Biomedical Research Center of the Slovak Academy of Sciences, Dubravska Cesta 9, 845 05 Bratislava, Slovakia.

Over the past two decades, plant viral vectors have emerged as a powerful tool for the production of recombinant proteins in plants. Among the different plant viruses engineered to carry foreign genes of interest in their genomes, potyviruses have gained attention due to their polyprotein expression strategy and broad host range. To date, at least eleven different species belonging to the genus have been used for heterologous gene expression in both their natural and experimental hosts.

Beyond Poliomyelitis: A 21-Year Study of Non-Polio Enterovirus Genotyping and Its Relevance in Acute Flaccid Paralysis in São Paulo, Brazil.

Divisão de Doenças de Transmissão Hídrica e Alimentar, Centro de Vigilância Epidemiológica "Prof. Alexandre Vranjac", Secretaria de Estado da Saúde de São Paulo, Sao Paulo 01246-900, Brazil.

In the context of the near-global eradication of wild poliovirus, the significance of non-polio enteroviruses (NPEVs) in causing acute flaccid paralysis (AFP) and their impact on public health has gained increased attention. This research, conducted from 2001 to 2021, examined stool samples from 1597 children under 15 years in São Paulo, Brazil, through the AFP/Poliomyelitis Surveillance Program, detecting NPEVs in 6.9% of cases.

Wolbachia-based mosquito control strategies have gained significant attention as a sustainable approach to reduce the transmission of vector-borne diseases such as dengue, Zika, and chikungunya. These endosymbiotic bacteria can limit the ability of mosquitoes to transmit pathogens, offering a promising alternative to traditional chemical-based interventions. With the growing impact of climate change on mosquito population dynamics and disease transmission, Wolbachia interventions represent an adaptable and resilient strategy for mitigating the public health burden of vector-borne diseases.

Most studies on the docking of ivermectin on the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2 concern the receptor binding domain (RBD) and, more precisely, the RBD interface recognized by the ACE2 receptor. The N-terminal domain (NTD), which controls the initial attachment of the virus to lipid raft gangliosides, has not received the attention it deserves. In this study, we combined molecular modeling and physicochemical approaches to analyze the mode of interaction of ivermectin with the interface of the NTD-facing lipid rafts of the host cell membrane.

Caliciviruses are a diverse group of non-enveloped, positive-sense RNA viruses with a wide range of hosts and transmission routes. Norovirus is the most well-known member of the ; the acute gastroenteritis caused by human norovirus (HuNoV), for example, frequently results in closures of hospital wards and schools during the winter months. One area of calicivirus biology that has gained increasing attention over the past decade is the conformational flexibility exhibited by the protruding (P) domains of the major capsid protein VP1.
