Surface acoustic wave (SAW) technology provides a sensitive platform for sensing chemicals in gaseous and fluidic states with the inherent advantages of passive and wireless operation. In this review, we provide a general overview on the fundamental aspects and some major advances of Rayleigh wave-based SAW sensors in sensing chemicals in a gaseous phase. In particular, we review the progress in general understanding of the SAW chemical sensing mechanism, optimization of the sensor characteristics, and the development of the sensors operational at different conditions. Based on previous publications, we suggest some appropriate sensing approaches for particular applications and identify new opportunities and needs for additional research in this area moving into the future.

Early and portable detection of pathogenic bacteria is crucial for ensuring food safety, monitoring product quality, and tracing the sources of bacterial infections. Moving beyond traditional plate-culture counting methods, the analysis of active bacterial components offers a rapid means of quantifying bacteria. Here, metal-organic framework (MOF)-derived NiCo-layered double hydroxide nanosheets (LDHs), synthesized via the Kirkendall effect, were employed as highly effective oxidase mimics to generate reactive oxygen species (ROS).

Defect engineering is an important method to control material properties. In this paper, large-scale sampling density functional theory (DFT) was used to investigate the adsorption and sensing behavior of NH and NO on a WSe monolayer, with a focus on the effect of selenium vacancy concentration. The results demonstrate that selectivity is inhibited on a perfect monolayer due to the similar adsorption energy of the two gases, NH and NO, while selectivity can be obtained for both of them under different selenium vacancy concentrations (NH about 2-5.

Microelectrodes offer exceptional sensitivity, rapid response, and versatility, making them ideal for real-time detection and monitoring applications. Photoelectrochemical (PEC) sensors have shown great value in many fields due to their high sensitivity, fast response, and ease of operation. Nevertheless, conventional PEC sensing relies on cumbersome external light sources and bulky electrodes, hindering its miniaturization and implantation, thereby limiting its application in real-time disease monitoring.

This review discusses the chemical properties, synthesis and detection, and biological functions of a molecular group of cis-2-unsaturated fatty acids, containing fatty acid carbon chains of various lengths and cis double-bond configurations, known as the diffusible signaling factor family (DSFF). Early postulation of the conserved nature of the DSFF among Gram-negative bacteria have now been challenged by the latest evidences that unraveled their presence in a various other distinct microorganisms. Over the last decade, a significant depth and breadth of understanding has been made on the multifaceted functions of DSFFs among bacteria, and their interactions with evolutionarily divergent fungi, plants insects and small animals.

Mechanochromic materials, known for their ability to change color in response to mechanical stimuli such as pressure, stretching, grinding, or rubbing, hold significant importance due to their diverse applications. In this study, we synthesized and characterized two novel pyridine-tethered imidazo[1,2-a]pyridine mechanoresponsive luminogens with appended tetraphenylethene, named GBY-10 and GBY-11. GBY-10 exhibited reversible mechanofluorochromism, while GBY-11 did not revert to its original color after solvent fuming.
