Published: July 2017

This Review focuses on research oriented toward elucidation of the various aspects that determine adsorption of CO in metal-organic frameworks and its separation from gas mixtures found in industrial processes. It includes theoretical, experimental, and combined approaches able to characterize the materials, investigate the adsorption/desorption/reaction properties of the adsorbates inside such environments, screen and design new materials, and analyze additional factors such as material regenerability, stability, effects of impurities, and cost among several factors that influence the effectiveness of the separations. CO adsorption, separations, and membranes are reviewed followed by an analysis of the effects of stability, impurities, and process operation conditions on practical applications.

Oral cancer is a major global health problem. It is commonly diagnosed at an advanced stage although often preceded by clinically visible oral mucosal lesions, termed oral potentially malignant disorders associated with an increased risk for oral cancer development. There is an unmet clinical need for effective screening tools to assist front-line healthcare providers to determine which patients should be referred to an oral cancer specialist for evaluation.

Introduction: Visual Inspection with Acetic Acid (VIA) has been adopted for cervical cancer screening in Kenya and other Low-Middle Income Countries despite providing suboptimal results among HIV-infected women. It is mostly performed by nurses in health centers. Innovative ways of improving the performance of VIA in HIV-infected women are desired.

Nonlinear activation functions (NAFs) are essential in artificial neural networks, enhancing learning capabilities by capturing complex input-output relationships. However, most NAF implementations rely on additional optoelectronic devices or digital computers, reducing the benefits of optical computing. To address this, we propose what we believe to be the first implementation of a nonlinear modulation process using an electro-optic IQ modulator on a silicon photonic convolution operator chip as a novel NAF.

To facilitate on-site detection by nonspecialists, there is a demand for the development of portable "sample-to-answer" devices capable of executing all procedures in an automated or easy-to-operate manner. Here, we developed an automated detection device that integrated a magnetofluidic manipulation system and a signal acquisition system. Both systems were controllable via a smartphone.

The hippocampus (HPC) has emerged as a critical player in the control of food intake, beyond its well-known role in memory. While previous studies have primarily associated the HPC with food intake inhibition, recent research suggests a role in appetitive processes. Here we identified spatially distinct neuronal populations within the dorsal HPC (dHPC) that respond to either fats or sugars, potent natural reinforcers that contribute to obesity development.
