n-Alkanes and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) bound to atmospheric particulate matter (PM) were investigated in a traffic site located in an urban area of Venice Province (Eastern Po Valley, Italy) during the cold season. Considering the critical situation affecting the Veneto Region concerning the atmospheric pollution and the general lack of information on PM composition and emission in this area, this experimental study aims at determining the source profile, their relative contributions and the dispersion of finer particles. Four sources were identified and quantified using the Positive Matrix Factorization receptor model: (1) mixed combustions related to the residential activities, (2) agricultural biomass burning in addition to the resuspension of anthropogenic and natural debris carried by the wind, (3) gasoline and (4) diesel traffic-related combustions. The role of local atmospheric circulation was also investigated to identify the pollutant sources.

Changes in climate and land-use have significantly increased both the frequency and intensity of wildland fires globally, exacerbating the potential for hazardous impacts on human health. A better understanding of particle exposure concentrations and scenarios is crucial for developing mitigation strategies to reduce the health risks. Here, PM and black carbon (BC) concentrations were monitored during wildland fires between 2022-2024, in fire-prone areas in Catalonia (NE Spain), by means of personal monitors (AirBeam2 and Micro-aethalometers AE51 and MA200).

The contamination of groundwater with geogenic ammonium (NH) across various geological backgrounds has garnered significant attention, particularly in coastal aquifer systems. However, there remains a gap in our understanding of the mechanisms governing the spatial variability of NH in coastal groundwater at a macroscopic scale. In this study, we collected the sediment samples from two boreholes corresponding to high-NH-N and low-NH-N groundwater.

Estimating PM exposure and its health impacts in cities involves large uncertainty due to the limitations of model resolutions. Consequently, attributing the sources of PM-related health impacts at the city level remains challenging. We characterize the health impacts associated with chronic PM exposure and anthropogenic emissions in Shanghai using a chemical transport model (GEOS-Chem) and its adjoint.

The distribution and transport of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in urban environments are influenced by both anthropogenic sources and natural landscape features. While previous research has primarily focused on human activities as drivers of PAH pollution, the role of terrain-especially in cities with complex topographies-remains underexplored. To investigate the effect of terrain features on PAH distribution and transport, we analyzed topsoil samples evenly distributed in Chongqing, a city with hilly terrain (elevation: 48-2300 m).

The occurrence of heavy metals is important for understanding their behavior in the sediments of river-salt lake ecosystems due to dramatically changes in salinity and flow velocity at the confluence area. Sediments and surface water samples were collected from the Golmud River-Dabson Salt Lake ecosystem, northwest China, to investigate the spatial distribution, sediment-water partitioning, risk assessment and source apportionment of heavy metals. Higher concentrations of heavy metals were observed in surface water from Dabson Salt Lake than in other regions.
