Aquatic ecosystems are expected to receive Ag and AgS nanoparticles (NPs) through anthropogenic waste streams. The speciation of silver in Ag-NPs affects their fate in ecosystems, but its influence on interactions with aquatic plants is still unclear. Here, the Ag speciation and distribution was measured in an aquatic plant, duckweed (Landoltia punctata), exposed to Ag or AgS NPs, or to AgNO. The silver distribution in duckweed roots was visualized using synchrotron-based micro X-ray fluorescence (XRF) mapping and Ag speciation was determined using extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. Duckweed exposed to AgS-NPs or Ag-NPs accumulated similar Ag concentrations despite an order of magnitude smaller dissolved Ag fraction measured in the exposure medium for AgS-NPs compared to Ag-NPs. By 24 h after exposure, all three forms of silver had accumulated on and partially in the roots regardless of the form of Ag exposed to the plants. Once associated with duckweed tissue, Ag-NPs had transformed primarily into silver sulfide and silver thiol species. This suggests that plant defenses were active within or at the root surface. The AgS-NPs remained as AgS, while AgNO exposure led to Ag and sulfur-associated Ag species in plant tissue. Thus, regardless of initial speciation, Ag was readily available to duckweed.

Partial oxidation of ethylene over silver catalysts produces more than 30 million metric tons of ethylene oxide (EO) annually. However, the form of active silver surfaces, reactive oxygen species, and dominant pathways of this chemical reaction remains controversial despite decades of research. Here, we use Raman spectroscopy and transient kinetic measurements to demonstrate that higher coverages of peroxide species, present only upon Ag oxide surfaces that form , correlate with greater selectivities to EO.

In this work, laponite (LAP) was used to develop the silver (Ag) based nanocomposite for improved anti-bacterial action and wound healing properties. The amphiphilic co-polymers such as PLGA polymer was embedded with the surface of LAP molecules and polyethyleneimine (PEI) through the interaction of hydrophobic binding and it was formed as LAP/PLA-PEG/PEI formulation through the coupling chemistry. The Ag nanoparticles was loaded into formulation to develop LAP/PLA-PEG/PEI/Ag nanocomposite and characterized by different analytical techniques.

Background: Breast implant surfaces are categorized as smooth or textured. Compared with smooth implants, textured surface implants have a higher risk of breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL) but may have a lower risk of capsular contracture (CC). This study aimed to quantify whether survey respondents would be willing to accept a higher risk of BIA-ALCL in exchange for the potential reported benefits of textured breast implants.

THz metamaterials present unique opportunities for next-generation technologies and applications as they can fill the "THz gap" originating from the weak response of natural materials in this regime, providing a variety of novel or advanced electromagnetic wave control components and systems. Here, we propose a novel metamaterial design made of three-dimensional, metallic, "cactus-like" meta-atoms, showing electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) and enhanced refractive index sensing performance at low THz frequencies. Following a detailed theoretical analysis, the structure is realized experimentally using multiphoton polymerization and electroless silver plating.

We examined whether neighborhood-level socioeconomic disadvantage per the Area Deprivation Index (ADI) was associated with maternal cardiovascular health (CVH) in early pregnancy per the American Heart Association Life's Essential 8 (LE8). This is a cross-sectional analysis from the prospective Nulliparous Pregnancy Outcomes Study-Monitoring Mothers-to-Be Heart Health Study (nuMoM2b-HHS) cohort. The exposure was the ADI in tertiles (T) from least (T1) to most (T3) socioeconomic disadvantage.
