The consumption of fatty acids (TFAs) is associated with an increased risk of cardiovascular disease, and reducing their consumption is a major public health objective. Food intake studies have provided estimates for TFA concentrations in the US population; however, there is a need for data on TFA blood concentrations in the population. The objective of this study was to determine plasma TFA concentrations in a nationally representative group of fasted adults in the US population in NHANES samples from 1999-2000 and 2009-2010. Four major TFAs [palmitelaidic acid (C16:1n-7t), vaccenic acid (C18:1n-7t), elaidic acid (C18:1n-9t), and linoelaidic acid (C18:2n-6t,9t)] were measured in plasma in 1613 subjects from NHANES 1999-2000 and 2462 subjects from NHANES 2009-2010 by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Geometric means and distribution percentiles were calculated for each TFA and their sum by age, sex, and race/ethnicity (non-Hispanic white, non-Hispanic black, Mexican American), and covariate-adjusted geometric means were computed by using a model that included these demographic and other dietary factors, as well as survey year and any significant interaction terms. These nationally representative data for the adult US population show that TFA concentrations were 54% lower in NHANES 2009-2010 than in NHANES 1999-2000. Covariate-adjusted geometric means for the sum of the 4 TFAs were 81.4 μmol/L (95% CI: 77.3, 85.6 μmol/L) and 37.8 μmol/L (95% CI: 36.4, 39.4 μmol/L) in NHANES 1999-2000 and 2009-2010, respectively. Even with the large decline in TFA concentrations, differences between demographic subgroups were comparable in the 2 surveys. The results indicate an overall reduction in TFA concentrations in the US population and provide a valuable baseline to evaluate the impact of the recent regulation categorizing TFAs as food additives.

Circulating trans fatty acids are related to serum levels of NT-proBNP in general population.

Int J Cardiol

January 2025

Department of Clinical Nutrition, Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital, Affiliated Hospital of Medical School, Nanjing University, Nanjing, Jiangsu, China. Electronic address:

Background: The consumption of trans fatty acids (TFAs) increases the risk of heart disease morbidity and mortality. However, the relationship between measurable indicators of TFAs and N-terminal pro-B-type natriuretic peptide (NT-proBNP) in general population remains unclear.

Methods: 1478 adult participants with complete information on circulating TFA and NT-proBNP levels from National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) 1999-2000 were included in our cross-sectional survey.

Research Question: Are the combined genotypes and haplotypes of vitamin D receptor (VDR) gene polymorphisms (FokI, ApaI and TaqI) associated with susceptibility to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and metabolic features of the disease?

Design: This case-control study included 46 women with PCOS and 48 controls. Genotypes of the VDR gene were determined using the polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism method. Waist circumference, and parameters of lipid and glucose metabolism were evaluated in all women.

Oscillatory Motion of a Camphor Disk on a Water Phase with an Ionic Liquid Sensitive to Transition Metal Ions.

We investigated oscillatory motion of a camphor disk floating on water containing 5 mM hexylethylenediaminium trifluoroacetate (HHexen-TFA) as an ionic liquid (IL). The frequency of the oscillatory motion increased with increasing concentrations of the transition metal ions Cu and Ni but was insensitive to Na, Ca, and Mg, the typical metal ions in the water phase. The surface tension of the water phase containing 5 mM HHexen-TFA also increased with increasing concentrations of Cu and Ni but was insensitive to Na, Ca, and Mg.

Electrocatalytic HER Performance of [FeFe]-Hydrogenase Mimics Bearing M-salen Moieties (M=Zn, Ni, Fe, Mn).

Departamento de Química Orgánica, Facultad de Química, Universidad Complutense, 28040-, Madrid, Spain.

The synthesis and characterization of novel compounds (5-8) as mimetics of [FeFe]-hydrogenase, combining two distinct systems capable of participating in hydrogen evolution reactions (HER): the [(μ-adt)Fe(CO)] fragment and M-salen complexes (salen=N,N'-bis(salicylidene)ethylenediamine) (M=Zn, Ni, Fe, Mn), is reported. These complexes were synthesized in high yields via a three-step procedure from N,N'-bis(4-R-salicylidene)ethanediamine) 4 [R=Fe(CO)(μ-SCH)NCOCHO]. Structural analysis through spectroscopic, spectrometric, and computational (DFT) methods confirmed distorted tetrahedral and square-planar geometries for Zn-salen and Ni-salen complexes (5 and 6) respectively, while complexes Fe-salen 7 and Mn-salen 8 exhibit square-based pyramidal structures typical of Fe(III) and Mn(III) high-spin salen-complexes.

We developed a novel surface-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (SALDI-MS) method to detect fungal spores, which is a critical concern in food safety. A combination of Fe and trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) was initially confirmed as an effective light absorber, facilitating the desorption and ionization of small organics in SALDI-MS. This approach was then successfully applied to the analysis of small organics derived from Aspergillus niger, aflatoxigenic Aspergillus flavus, and non-aflatoxigenic A.
