Biosorption is nowadays recommended as an ecological and environmentally friendly alternative to remove metals from contaminated regions. Even in situ incubations of algae on the seabed are conducted to investigate potential future ways of reducing metal contamination. Our study investigated the negative effects on microorganisms when metal-enriched algae are released into the marine environment.

Observational studies have shown that cadmium exposure increases the risk of cardiovascular disease, but the underlying mechanism is still unclear. Atherosclerotic plaque can cause vascular obstruction, which is important for the death from cardiovascular disease. Cell damage and monocyte adhesion are two early events in atherosclerotic plaque formation that can be induced by cadmium exposure, but the mechanism remains to be determined.

Endocrine-disrupting compounds (EDCs) may contribute to the rising incidence of metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD). We investigated the potential of 10 environmentally relevant EDCs to affect key events of hepatic steatosis in HepG2 human hepatoma cells. Increased lipid droplet formation, a key marker of steatosis, was induced by PFOA, bisphenol F, DDE, butylparaben, and DEHP, within the non-cytotoxic concentration range of 1 nM-25 μM.

Background: Globally, salinity poses a threat to crop productivity by hindering plant growth and development via osmotic stress and ionic cytotoxicity. Plant extracts have lately been employed as exogenous adjuvants to improve endogenous plant defense mechanisms when grown under various environmental stresses, such as salinity. This study investigated the potential of melatonin (Mt; 0, 50, and 100 mM) as an antioxidant and licorice root extract (LRE; 0.
