We design a photonic crystal (PhC) lens whose focal length is highly tunable based on the frequency sensitive super-collimation (FSSC) phenomenon. Theoretically, an analytic expression of the focal length in PhCs is derived. The diffraction could be dramatically changed by modest change in refractive index of the dielectric rods in PhCs, because the sensitivity of the equi-frequency-contours around FSSC to refractive index is several orders larger than that in common bulk material. Numerically, we demonstrate that focal length can be nearly one order larger with only 0.2% refractive index change, from 28a (a is lattice constant) to 240a. With its micro-size, high sensitivity and feasibility by on-chip technology, such tunable lens has great potentials in modern optical systems.

Contamination of aquatic ecosystems with heavy metals poses a significant global issue due to its hazardous effects and persistent accumulation in living organisms. This study analyzed 51 fish samples from two species of Black Fish, Capoeta saadii and Capoeta trutta, collected from Iran's Khorramroud River during the summer and fall of 2022 to assess heavy metal accumulation in their gill, liver, and muscle tissues. After biometry, the studied tissues of each fish were isolated to measure the concentration of heavy metals (cadmium (Cd), zinc (Zn), chromium (Cr), lead (Pb), copper (Cu), and nickel (Ni)).

Emphasis on enhanced recovery after surgery (ERAS) protocols and opioid use reduction have led to a growing interest in alternative pain management strategies. This study describes and evaluates the ultrasound-guided suprazygomatic maxillary (SZM) nerve blocks for patients undergoing functional and cosmetic nasal surgery as an adjunct to postoperative pain management. A retrospective, multicenter analysis was conducted on patients who underwent functional nasal surgery and rhinoplasty and evaluated the impact of SZM blocks on intraoperative anesthetic and opioid use, postoperative pain scores recorded in the PACU, and PACU length.

RNA binding protein dysfunction is a pathogenic feature of multiple neurological diseases, including multiple sclerosis (MS). Neurodegeneration (the loss of, or damage to neurons and axons) is the primary driver of disease progression in MS. Herein, we utilized a novel, neuron-specific model of neurodegeneration by transducing primary mouse neurons with mutant forms of the RNA binding protein heterogeneous nuclear ribonucleoprotein A1 (hnRNP A1) identified from MS patients, including one within the M9-nuclear localization sequence of hnRNP A1 (A1(P275S)) and a second in the prion-like domain of hnRNP A1 (A1(F263S)) to test the hypothesis that neuronal hnRNP A1 dysfunction drives neurodegeneration in MS.

Background: We sought to determine the wound complications associated with a straight midline incision overlying the Achilles tendon. Data on sex, age, body mass index (BMI), surgery performed, date of surgery, and wound development were collected.
Methods: We retrospectively collected data on 217 patients with a mean ± SD age of 46.

Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) remains an aggressive malignancy. The occurrence of perineural invasion is associated with neuropathic pain and poor prognosis of PDAC, underscoring the active participation of nerves and their potential as therapeutic targets. Lidocaine is a local anesthetic with antitumor properties in some tumors in the clinic.
