This study philosophically examines Albert Camus' "The Renegade, or a Confused Spirit," one of the short stories in Exile and the Kingdom. Despite previous scholarly interpretations of the story, the direct correlation between religion and mental health has not been explored sufficiently. In utilizing the theoretical framework of fiction as analogous to philosophical thought experiments, this article infers the pedagogical dimension of the short story, leading to the claim that "The Renegade" creates an aesthetic experience with the potential and risk to counter or reinforce the reader's ideologies, including religious ones.

Effects of surface morphology and chemical composition on friction properties of Xenopeltis hainanensis scales.

J Mech Behav Biomed Mater

December 2024

Key Laboratory of Bionic Engineering (Ministry of Education), Jilin University, Changchun, 130025, China; Weihai Institute for Bionics-Jilin University, Weihai, 264402, China.

Article Synopsis
  • - The scales of the Xenopeltis hainanensis snake are being studied for their unique properties, which can inspire new bionic materials designed with scale-like features for improved performance in various environments.
  • - A thorough analysis reveals that the scales have a comb-like microstructure that enhances surface area and minimizes pressure, while the bending capabilities of collagen fibrils allow for effective energy dissipation to prevent structural failures.
  • - The ventral scales are particularly resilient due to their greater thickness and higher sulfur content, resulting in superior mechanical properties, as supported by advanced testing techniques like Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and SEM imaging.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study focused on creating Zinc Oxide nanoparticles (ZnO NPs) from A. modesta leaves extract using a cost-effective method, and the nanoparticles were thoroughly characterized using various techniques like UV-Vis Spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction analysis.
  • - Characterization revealed the hexagonal structure of ZnO NPs with an average size of 68.3 nm and a band gap of 2.71 eV, along with notable shapes and elemental composition shown in SEM and EDX analyses.
  • - The synthesized ZnO NPs demonstrated significant biomedical potential, with high antileishmanial (68%), anti-inflammatory (78%), and antibacterial activities, suggesting their promising applications in healthcare and environmental settings.

Cancer development takes 10 to 50 years, and epigenetics plays an important role. Recent evidence suggests that ~80% of human cancers are linked to environmental factors impinging upon genetics/epigenetics. Because advanced metastasized cancers are resistant to radiation/chemotherapeutic drugs, cancer prevention by relatively nontoxic "epigenetic modifiers" will be logical.
