This study investigates the utility of a hybrid adsorption-membrane process for cake compressibility evaluation of biotreated palm oil mill effluent (BPOME). A low-cost empty fruit bunch (EFB) based powdered activated carbon (PAC) was employed for the upstream adsorption process with operation conditions of 60 g/L PAC dose, 68 min mixing time, and 200 rpm mixing speed to reduce the feed-water strength and alleviate probable fouling of the membranes. Two polyethersulfone microfiltration (MF) membranes of 0.1 and 0.2 μm pore sizes were investigated under constant transmembrane pressures (TMP) of 40, 80, and 120 kPa. The compressibility factors (z), which was obtained from the slopes of power plots (function of specific cake resistance (α) and pressure gradient) were evaluated. The z values of 0.32 and 0.52, respectively obtained, for the 0.1 and 0.2 μm MF membranes provided compressible and stable z values as observed from their power plots. Besides, these membranes were found suitable for the measurement of z since the results are in consonance with the established principle of cake compressibility. Moreover, the upstream adsorption mitigated the clogging of the membranes which ultimately led to moderate resistances and cake compressibility. These are indications that with the secondary cake filtration, a sustainable flux can be achieved during BPOME filtration. The membranes exhibited close to 100% restoration after cleaning.

Maintaining the stability of microbubbles is essential for enhancing the longevity of aphronic water-based drilling fluid usage in drilling depleted reservoirs and other under-pressured zones. Here, we introduce the integration of partially reduced graphene oxide (PrGO) nanosheets into the shell of aphron microbubbles (AMBS) to enhance the stability and size distribution, particularly for drilling fluid applications and carbon geological storage. The amphiphilic characteristic of PrGO nanosheets, due to meticulous control of the reduction process of graphene oxide, facilitates their spontaneous adsorption at interfaces, thereby reducing the interfacial energy as a two-dimensional surfactant.

The effective treatment of food waste digestate is critical for reducing environmental pollution and mitigating carbon emissions, with deep dewatering playing a pivotal role. Conventional dewatering agents such as polyaluminum chloride (PAC) and polyacrylamide (PAM), commonly employed in municipal sludge treatment, exhibit limited efficacy when applied to food waste digestate due to the latter's high salinity and advanced fermentation stages. This study introduces polyethylene oxide (PEO) as a novel conditioning agent and investigates its dewatering performance in comparison to PAC and PAM, elucidating the underlying mechanism.

The disposal and reutilization of the enormous amounts of slurry-like mud (MS) dredged from navigation channel construction, ecological dredging, and other construction activities have been receiving increasing attention. In this paper, a flocculation-solidification-high-pressure filtration combined method (FSHCM) is used to treat MS, and the consolidation characteristics of The SHCM-treated MS are studied by conducting a series of one-dimensional consolidation compression tests. Various parameters, including the dosage of the curing agent, initial water content, and dry weight of the MS, are systematically analyzed to evaluate their influence on the consolidation behavior.

Conventional solid oral dosage form development is not typically challenged by reliance on an amorphous drug substance as a direct ingredient in the drug product, as this may result in product development hurdles arising from process design and scale-up, control of physical quality attributes, drug product processability and stability. Here, we present the Chemistry, Manufacturing and Controls development journey behind the successful commercialization of an amorphous drug substance, Elagolix Sodium, a first-in-class, orally active gonadotropin-releasing hormone antagonist. The reason behind the lack of crystalline state was assessed via Molecular Dynamics (MD) at the molecular and inter-molecular level, revealing barriers for nucleation due to prevalence of intra-molecular hydrogen bond, repulsive interactions between active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) molecules and strong solvation effects.

Castor oil has been widely used in various fields due to its properties, leading to large attention for its extraction mechanism. To research the castor oil extraction mechanism during pressing, a self-developed uniaxial compression device combined with an in situ observation is established. The effects of pressure, loading speed, and creep time are investigated, and a finite element model coupling with multi-physics is established for castor oil pressing extraction, verified by the seed cake experimental compression strain matching with numerical simulation under the same condition.
