Introduction: Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is a rare clinical entity in the paediatric population. Clinical presentation is mostly similar to adult counterpart and can include headaches, vomiting, papilloedema, deterioration in visual acuity or fields, and 6th cranial nerve palsy, leading to significant morbidity. Therapeutic lumbar puncture and medical treatment with acetazolamide are usually the first-line treatments.

Background: Acute mountain sickness (AMS) is a debilitating condition that individuals may develop on ascent to high altitude. It is characterized by headache, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, and fatigue with the potential to progress to fatal disease. Although the pathophysiology of AMS remains unclear, proposed mechanisms are hypothesized to be similar to migraine.

Case for supporting astrocyte energetics in glucose transporter 1 deficiency syndrome.

Epilepsia

August 2024

School of Biomedical Sciences, University of Queensland, St Lucia, Queensland, Australia.

In glucose transporter 1 deficiency syndrome (Glut1DS), glucose transport into brain is reduced due to impaired Glut1 function in endothelial cells at the blood-brain barrier. This can lead to shortages of glucose in brain and is thought to contribute to seizures. Ketogenic diets are the first-line treatment and, among many beneficial effects, provide auxiliary fuel in the form of ketone bodies that are largely metabolized by neurons.

Background: Idiopathic intracranial hypertension (IIH) is a disease characterized by elevated intracranial pressure (ICP) and is a disease of young females. The first line pharmacological treatments include acetazolamide and topiramate and given the nature of IIH patients and the dosing regimen of these drugs, their effect on the endocrine system is important to evaluate. We aimed to assess the effects of acetazolamide and topiramate on steroid profiles in relevant endocrine tissues.

Successful treatment approaches for tumoral calcinosis in children and young people: A condition of diverse pathogenesis.

Bone

May 2024

Institute of Metabolism and Systems Research, University of Birmingham, Birmingham, UK; Department of Endocrinology and Diabetes, Birmingham Women's and Children's Hospital, Birmingham, UK. Electronic address:

Background: Ectopic calcification is inappropriate biomineralization of soft tissues occurring due to genetic or acquired causes of hyperphosphataemia and rarely in normophosphataemic individuals. Tumoral Calcinosis (TC) is a rare metabolic bone disorder commonly presenting in childhood and adolescence with periarticular extra-capsular calcinosis. Three subtypes of TC have been recognised: primary hyperphosphataemic familial TC (HFTC), primary normophosphataemic familial TC and secondary TC most commonly seen in chronic renal failure.
