We report what we believe to be potential improved performance for a Nd:YAG discrete path slab amplifier configuration based on a hybrid resonator system. The amplifier is driven by a Q-switched 0.3 mJ nanosecond oscillator that generates an initial laser pulse at a repetition rate of 5 KHz and has beam quality of M<1.3. The input pulse makes 12 passes through the slab amplifier to yield 25 mJ output pulse energy at the absorbed pump power of 878 W. A corresponding optical-to-optical efficiency of 14.3% was obtained, and the beam quality factors M in the unstable and stable direction were 1.7 and 1.5, respectively. No detectable signs of amplified spontaneous emission were observed.

The infrared spectrum of bilirubin has been recorded in the spectral region 200-4000 cm(-1). The Raman spectrum has also been recorded using the second harmonic (530 nm) radiation of a 200 mW Nd-YAG laser. In order to confirm the vibrational assignment of the bands obtained from experimental observation, a normal coordinate analysis has been carried out using the semi-empirical AM1 method through MOPAC 5.

Laser-therapy represents an acceptable alternative in the palliative treatment of colon cancer. We have treated 25 patients with this pathology, 10 with obstructive tumor, which impeded the insertion of the endoscope, and 15 non-obstructive tumors. Higher technical difficulties on the former, together with a worse clinical situation, due to the fact that the tumor was more invasive, produce a more discrete result and with a higher risk of complications (one patient had a perforation and other an obstructive stenosis after two months of treatment) in comparison with the group of patients with non-obstructive tumors.

A technique is described whereby it is possible to surgically ablate the lumbosacral spinal cord of a developing mouse fetus without interfering with fetal viability. The lumbosacral spinal cords of 14-day in utero, 129ReJ mice were ablated with a Cooper Nd-YAG laser, and the fetuses, enclosed in their membranes and attached to the uterus by their placentae, were allowed to develop in the abdominal cavity of the dam.
