Unlabelled: The Saccharomyces Genome Database (SGD; www.yeastgenome.org ), the primary genetics and genomics resource for the budding yeast S. cerevisiae , provides free public access to expertly curated information about the yeast genome and its gene products. As the central hub for the yeast research community, SGD engages in a variety of social outreach efforts to inform our users about new developments, promote collaboration, increase public awareness of the importance of yeast to biomedical research, and facilitate scientific discovery. Here we describe these various outreach methods, from networking at scientific conferences to the use of online media such as blog posts and webinars, and include our perspectives on the benefits provided by outreach activities for model organism databases.

In Saccharomyces cerevisiae cells, the bulk of mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) replication is mediated by the replicative high-fidelity DNA polymerase γ. However, upon UV irradiation low-fidelity translesion polymerases: Polη, Polζ and Rev1, participate in an error-free replicative bypass of UV-induced lesions in mtDNA. We analysed how translesion polymerases could function in mitochondria.

is a non-Saccharomyces yeast that is widely used in winemaking due to its ability to ferment malic acid, thus improving organoleptic properties of wine. We report the draft genome sequence of strain I-540, isolated from grape must in Russia.

The kingdom of fungi contains highly diverse species. However, fundamental processes sustaining life such as RNA metabolism are much less comparatively studied in Fungi than in other kingdoms. A key factor in the regulation of mRNA expression is the cap-binding protein eIF4E, which plays roles in mRNA nuclear export, storage and translation.

Quiescence in is a reversible G crucial for long-term survival under nutrient-deprived conditions. During quiescence, the genome is hypoacetylated and chromatin undergoes significant compaction. However, the 3D structure of the ribosomal DNA (rDNA) locus in this state is not well understood.

Acetaldehyde is the primary metabolite of alcohol and is present in many environmental sources including tobacco smoke. Acetaldehyde is genotoxic, whereby it can form DNA adducts and lead to mutagenesis. Individuals with defects in acetaldehyde clearance pathways have increased susceptibility to alcohol-associated cancers.
