Undoubtedly, the discovery of penicillin is one of the greatest milestones in modern medicine. 2016 marks the 75th anniversary of the first systemic administration of penicillin in humans, and is therefore an occasion to reflect upon the extraordinary impact that penicillin has had on the lives of millions of people since. This perspective presents a historical account of the discovery of the wonder drug, describes the biological nature of penicillin, and considers lessons that can be learned from the golden era of antibiotic research, which took place between the 1940s and 1960s. Looking back at the history of penicillin might help us to relive this journey to find new treatments and antimicrobial agents. This is particularly relevant today as the emergence of multiple drug resistant bacteria poses a global threat, and joint efforts are needed to combat the rise and spread of resistance.

, the bacteria that causes syphilis, is typically acquired through sexual contact but can also be transmitted transplacentally (through the placenta), causing congenital infection. Syphilis in pregnancy is a major contributing factor to perinatal morbidity and mortality. Untreated neonates may develop complications affecting the central nervous system, bones, joints, teeth, eyes, and skin.

Purpose: The study aimed to identify and assess the methodological quality of essential clinical guidelines for the management of laryngitis and pharyngitis.
Methods: A systematic search of clinical guidelines for the management of laryngitis and pharyngitis was performed in three databases. Methodological quality was assessed according to AGREE II, in which each item in its domains was scored by four independent evaluators.

Objectives: In this study, bacteria isolated from companion animals in China were taxonomically identified and assessed for antimicrobial susceptibility to evaluate the prevalence of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) in pets.
Methods: From October 2022 to October 2023, 5468 samples were collected from pets, predominantly from cats and dogs, in China, of which 5253 bacterial strains were identified (>98%). Antimicrobial susceptibility was assessed using the VITEK 2 COMPACT system and the Kirby-Bauer disc diffusion method.

Antimicrobial prophylaxis is crucial in reducing surgical site infections (SSIs). First-generation cephalosporins are commonly first line, but issues arise when patients report a penicillin allergy. Although up to 10% of Americans report a penicillin allergy, up to 95% are not truly allergic.

Leptospirosis is a severe and potentially fatal re-emerging zoonotic and waterborne disease caused by pathogenic and intermediate species of Leptospira. Given the high global rates of morbidity and mortality associated with this disease, there is an urgent need to explore alternative therapeutic agents to enhance treatment options. This study investigates the anti-leptospiral efficacy of several common antibiotics-penicillin G, doxycycline, ampicillin, amoxicillin, cefotaxime, chloramphenicol, and erythromycin, as well as extracts from local herbs, Hydnophytum formicarum Jack and Boesenbergia stenophylla, against pathogenic and intermediate Leptospira strains.
