[Purpose] The purpose of this study is to investigate the factors causing falling among patients with schizophrenia hospitalized in psychiatric hospitals. [Subjects and Methods] The study subjects were divided into either those having experienced a fall within the past one year (Fall group, 12 patients) and those not having experienced a fall (Non-fall group, 7 patients), and we examined differences between the two groups. Assessment items measured included muscle strength, balance ability, flexibility, body composition assessment, Global Assessment of Functioning scale (GAF), the antipsychotic drug intake, and Drug Induced Extra-Pyramidal Symptoms Scale (DIEPSS). [Results] As a result, significant differences were observed in regard to One leg standing time with eyes open, Time Up and Go Test (TUGT), and DIEPSS Sialorrhea between the Fall group and the Non-fall group. [Conclusion] These results suggest that a decrease in balance ability was significantly correlated with falling in schizophrenia patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined how COVID-19 restrictions influenced the duration of untreated psychosis (DUP) among first-time psychosis patients in Connecticut.
  • During the early pandemic, the median DUP significantly dropped from 208 days to 56 days, but later increased to 154 days.
  • The time from when psychosis began to starting antipsychotic medication also decreased from 117 days to 35 days, indicating that tighter pandemic restrictions led to quicker treatment responses and could inform future early detection strategies.

Community Ment Health J

December 2024

Saks Institute for Mental Health Law, Policy and Ethics, Gould School of Law, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA, USA.

There are few studies of impacts of arts on recovery in schizophrenia, on audience and cast responses. We developed a formative qualitative evaluation of audience and cast discussions after viewing live performances in a university setting of an opera based on Elyn Saks' journey from psychosis, teaching law and falling in love, coupled with pre-opera workshop on community approaches to resilience. Live discussions were conducted with audience, cast members, and workshop presenters after performance of the opera, with recording and transcription, and reflexive thematic qualitative analysis sequentially conducted by 3 investigators/2 event leaders).

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the relationship between age at onset (AAO) of psychiatric disorders and genetic heterogeneity using Family Genetic Risk Scores (FGRS).
  • Researchers focused on five disorders: drug use disorder, alcohol use disorder, major depression, bipolar disorder, and schizophrenia, analyzing individuals born in Sweden between 1940-2003.
  • Results showed that as AAO increased, schizophrenia displayed increased genetic risk, while major depression became more genetically homogenous, highlighting significant inter-disorder differences in how AAO affects genetic risks.
