In connection with studies on the effect of genetic abnormalities on development, a film was made of the normal development of theDrosophila embryo. Time-lapse motion technique was used, and this made it possible to make new observations on those phases of the development which involve large re-arrangements of the embryonic material, in particular on blastoderm formation, gastrulation and involution of the head. These new observations have been incorporated in an account of the complete development of the embryo up to the time of hatching.

Traditionally, the study of crystal polymorphism has relied on thermodynamics and measurements averaged over time and the crystal's constituents. This work introduces a kinetic approach to phase identification─millisecond cinematographic electron microscopic imaging of the dynamics of phase transitions of crystals of a few nm in diameter. We demonstrate a remarkable impact of the interface energy on the relative stability of the nanocrystal's polymorphs, enabling in situ manipulation of phase transitions through size increase or decrease.

Background: Physiological motion of the lumbar spine is a topic of interest for musculoskeletal health care professionals since abnormal motion is believed to be related to lumbar complaints. Many researchers have described ranges of motion for the lumbar spine, but only few have mentioned specific motion patterns of each individual segment during flexion and extension, mostly comprising the sequence of segmental initiation in sagittal rotation. This article examines cinematographic observational studies of infants conducted by a loosely connected group of female psychologists and physicians in the USA from the 1930s to the 1960s. Largely forgotten today, these practitioners realized detailed and carefully planned research projects about infant behavior in a variety of settings-from the laboratory to the well-baby clinic. Although their studies were in conversation with better-known works, such as John Bowlby's research on attachment and René Spitz's films on institutionalized infants, they differed in a close examination of individual characteristics of babies and a critical attitude toward contemporary notions of 'pathological mothering'.
