-Butanol derived from biochemical and chemical routes: A review.

Traditionally, bio-butanol is produced with the ABE (Acetone Butanol Ethanol) process using species to ferment sugars from biomass. However, the route is associated with some disadvantages such as low butanol yield and by-product formation (acetone and ethanol). On the other hand, butanol can be directly produced from ethanol through aldol condensation over metal oxides/ hydroxyapatite catalysts. This paper suggests that the chemical conversion route is more preferable than the ABE process, because the reaction proceeds more quickly compared to the fermentation route and fewer steps are required to get to the product.

The biological fixation of CO and C1-feedstocks like methanol derived from CO are considered as an important technology combating in global warming issues. The microorganisms that can co-assimilate CO and methanol are highly desired. Here, we constructed a synergistic assimilation pathway in Butyribacterium methylotrophicum (B.

  • Pseudomonas aeruginosa is problematic in healthcare due to its high antibiotic resistance, highlighting the need for new antimicrobial solutions.
  • A study focused on isolating a new bacteriocin from Enterococcus faecium found in stool samples, which showed promise against multidrug-resistant P. aeruginosa.
  • The purified bacteriocin, enterocin GH, demonstrated significant antibacterial and antibiofilm activity against P. aeruginosa, outperforming controls in laboratory tests.

This study evaluated the impact of fermentation with Lactobacillus acidophilus pre-subjected to acid, osmotic, and oxidative stress conditions on the production of metabolites and the bioaccessibility of nutrients and bioactive compounds in fermented milks and yogurts. The products were added with orange bagasse (additional calcium - Ca source) and buriti pulp (carotenoids source). Gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (GC-MS) and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) were used to analyze the volatile and non-volatile compounds metabolites from fermentation, respectively.

A Health Risk Assessment of Workers Exposed to Organic Paint Solvents Used in the Korean Shipbuilding Industry.

Toxics

December 2024

Health and Safety Convergence Science Introduction, College of Health Science, Korea University, Seoul 02841, Republic of Korea.

In the shipbuilding industry, during the painting process, workers are exposed to various substances in paint, including organic solvents that can adversely affect their health. Most workplace exposures to organic solvents involve mixtures of organic compounds. Therefore, in this study, the hazard quotient (HQ) and hazard index (HI) were derived using data from the Workplace Environmental Monitoring Program in Korea for six organic solvents (xylene, n-butanol, ethylbenzene, isobutyl alcohol, toluene, and methylisobutyl ketone [MIBK]) commonly used in the steel shipbuilding industry.
